Successful candidates will complement and provide support to qualified nurses in Horizon/A&E. They will work as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team in Horizon and the larger A&E department, using their professional skill-set and calming influence to meet the physical and emotional needs of the service users in a caring and empathic manner. They will be able to maintain a safe, clean, and enjoyable environment to work in.
Main Duties of the Job
The applicants will use their specialist knowledge and skill set to identify and detail deterioration/improvements and fluctuations in patients' mental health and feedback to the RMN. Your energy and drive will be rewarded with the support of an enthusiastic team.
The support worker will play an active role in maintaining patients' wellbeing by providing and supporting individual or group activities if/when necessary and undertaking any reasonable request within their competencies and understanding. Candidates will be aware of the NMUH core values, policies, and procedures and maintain a level of service that meets the standards of the hospital.
Job Responsibilities
* Building relationships with patients to encourage trust while listening to their needs and concerns.
* Ensuring that the patient is the prime focus when making decisions about their care and wellbeing.
* Assisting in the delivery of patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse.
* Assisting patients with compassion when undertaking normal activities of daily living while ensuring that privacy, dignity, and human rights are respected.
* Implementing holistic, culturally sensitive, respectful, non-judgmental care from a pre-determined care plan for patients with a wide range of care needs.
* Monitoring patients' conditions and the results of treatment.
* Responding to distressed patients in a non-threatening manner and attempting to understand the source of their discomfort.
* Helping patients manage their emotions through de-escalation techniques.
* Organising activities aimed at occupying patients and helping to reduce their feelings of isolation while waiting in Horizon.
* Providing routine patient care duties at their discretion in accordance with Trust policies, protocols, and guidelines.
* Participating in the taking and recording of observations under the direction of the Registered Nurse and reporting the results to the Nurse in charge.
* Using initiative when responding to changes in a patient's condition within their sphere of practice.
* Recognising limitations and escalating concerns.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* PMVA Training Certificate
* NVQ level 2 in Health and/or Social Care
Experience
* A minimum of 6 months experience as a Healthcare Assistant (Mental Health).
* Demonstrable understanding of an Acute Mental Health environment.
* Knowledge of some physical health care.
Skills and Abilities
* Ability to take on and complete tasks designated by managers, RMNs such as audits, checklists.
* Carry out procedures and techniques in accordance with agreed policies and standards.
* Management of violence and aggression/challenging behaviour.
* Experience of working with acute mental health patients in an initial assessment unit.
