Professional Doctorate and Clinical Training in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Applications are invited for this four year, full-time clinically based professional training leading to qualification as a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist and eligibility for employment as a Child Psychotherapist. NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is commissioning a new cohort through the Human Development Scotland Professional Clinical Doctorate programme beginning in September 2025, with 5 places available places across NHS Scotland Health Boards. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who is interested in developing their career in child psychotherapy in Scotland. The employing health boards are: NHS Fife NHS Grampian NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS Lanarkshire NHS Tayside On successful completion of the course you will be awarded a Professional Doctorate, accredited by the University of East London (D Ch Psych Psych). You will be eligible for professional accreditation with the Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP) and membership of the Scottish Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists (SAPP). This is a four year, full-time course to clinical qualification with further time needed to complete the doctoral thesis. Entry to the course is dependent on: Work experience Pre-clinical studies Personal suitability Academic requirements Personal analysis This clinical training was first accredited by the ACP in 1989 when it was delivered by the Scottish Institute of Human Relations. In 2007, the training was validated as a doctoral programme, in conjunction with the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust/University of East London. Scotland has a vibrant psychoanalytic community and Human Development Scotland is the centre for clinical training in adult psychotherapy, in therapeutic work with children & young people, in psychodynamic counselling and a range short courses in areas such as infant mental health and working with adolescents.
