We are looking to recruit a Clinical Psychologist at Band 8a, with real enthusiasm to work across both the Older People's Mental Health (OPMH) organic inpatient service, Elmwood Ward (0.5wte), and the functional mental health inpatient service, Beechwood Ward (0.5wte), at Parklands Hospital. Elmwood Ward provides care to older people with organic conditions such as dementia and behaviour that challenges, aiming to provide an integrated service that supports their families and the associated care systems. The ward provides a dementia-friendly environment, keeping patients at the heart of the service. The staff team is dedicated to excellent service delivery and bases their work on the Newcastle Model.
Main duties of the job
As a Clinical Psychologist (Principal) for the Older Peoples' Mental Health inpatient service, Beechwood Ward (functional) and Elmwood Ward (organic) at Parklands Hospital, you will:
1. Work autonomously as an independent practitioner responsible for your own work and interventions, interpreting agreed guidelines and policies in providing a highly specialist Psychological Therapies Service.
2. Continue the implementation of a psychological therapies service to OPMH patients on the organic inpatient unit (Elmwood Ward) and provide psychological input to the mental health inpatient unit (Beechwood Ward).
3. Undertake complex assessments and consultancy, providing expert advice to Psychological Services colleagues and the wider clinical multi-professional team.
4. Provide specialist treatment for complex cases and plan and prioritise your clinical workload, including the assessment and treatment of the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.
5. Comment and propose changes to policy or service development within the psychological service area and team.
6. Provide specialist supervision for trainee psychologists and psychological guidance and supervision for multidisciplinary clinical colleagues.
7. Undertake research and development and encourage a research culture within the wider clinical team.
8. Utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development, and research.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* DClinPsy or DCounsPsy including models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies, and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.
* HCPC Registration
* Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training, and/or other fields of applied psychology.
Experience
* In-depth experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care, and inpatient settings.
* Experience working with a wide variety of client groups across the life course, presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity, including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse, and the threat of physical abuse.
* Demonstrated further specialist training/experience through having received a minimum of 50 hours clinical supervision while working as an applied psychologist.
* Experience of working within a Community Mental Health Team or inpatient service within the NHS.
* Experience of teaching, training, and/or supervision.
* Experience of applying clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
* Experience in older people's mental health.
* Experience working with people with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia or other presentations.
* Experience working with carers.
Additional Criteria
* Skills in using complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention, and management requiring sustained and intense concentration.
* Well-developed skills in effectively communicating complex, highly technical, and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers, and other professional colleagues.
* Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
* Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design, and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
* Ability to teach and train others using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional, and academic settings.
* Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour.
* Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the principles of recovery, choice, and personalisation.
* Ability to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines.
* Ability to compassionately interact with people with severe mental health problems and organic conditions and their families/carers.
* Ability to work independently, reliably, and consistently with work agreed and managed at regular intervals.
* Ability to undertake the duties and demands of the post, with a satisfactory sickness record over the previous 2 years (subject to fairness and equality of opportunity, particularly where sickness is related to a disability and/or pregnancy).
* Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in difficult-to-treat dementia and neurodegenerative conditions.
* High-level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies.
* Knowledge of legislation related to the client group and mental health.
* Experience of working within a multicultural framework.
* Full driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes.
* Interest in working with older people with severe mental health problems and people living with dementia.

Salary: £53,775 to £60,504 a year based on full-time hours.
