Job Description
Nuclear Core Physicist - Submarines
Full time
Derby
Why Rolls-Royce?
Our submarines business is responsible for the design, manufacture, supply, and through-life support of nuclear propulsion plants to provide pioneering power to the Royal Navy's submarine fleet. You can find out more about the amazing projects that we are working on here: Watch here.
We offer excellent career development, a competitive salary, and exceptional benefits. Above all, you'll be working on a wide variety of interesting reactor physics work packages, which contribute to defence projects that are central to national security.
The Core Physics team is responsible for all reactor physics involvements across the nuclear lifecycle of the Royal Navy's fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. These involvements include designing, supporting manufacture, and commissioning of reactor cores powering submarines, as well as substantiating, monitoring, and optimising their through-life performance. A career within this team provides the opportunity to be involved in the initial phase of a reactor core design and follow its journey until it is taken critical and starts powering a submarine. This is a unique opportunity in the United Kingdom Nuclear Industry.
What you will be doing
* Designing and substantiating reactor cores using both Deterministic and Stochastic methods.
* Supporting manufacture of reactor cores.
* Designing experiments and performing measurements in our zero-energy critical benchmarking facility.
* Supporting the UK submarine fleet with onboard tests and trials.
* Connecting with other centres of physics knowledge and skills, such as our industry partner, civil nuclear and academia.
* Researching, developing, and applying new and novel improvements across all areas of reactor physics, including validation of new methods, and exploring ways to maximise operational capability.
Who we are looking for
Being a part of Rolls-Royce, you'll know we embrace agility, are bold, pursue collaboration, and seek simplicity in everything we do. These principles form our values and behaviours and are an essential component of our assessment process and are fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.
Reactor physics opportunities are available at all levels from those expecting to graduate in the near future to experienced senior physicists, with the specifics of each role tailored to the successful candidate. We're looking for candidates with:
* A strong academic background with a relevant degree (undergraduate, masters, or PhD) in engineering, physics, or a scientific subject.
* Experience working in reactor physics or the wider nuclear industry.
* An analytical mindset, critical thinking, and attention to detail.
* The ability to communicate effectively with any audience, quickly establishing credibility and buy-in.
* A willingness to learn from others and collaborate to achieve wider goals.
We're an equal opportunities employer. We're committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives.
And the more perspectives we have, the more successful we'll be. By building a culture of respect and appreciation, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.
To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines, you need to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you don't currently have this in place.
Due to the nature of work the business conducts and the protection of certain assets, you must hold a UK nationality. Any dual nationals will require additional scrutiny and background checks prior to commencing work with RRSL.
