Contents Location About the job Benefits Things you need to know Apply and further information Location Croydon About the job Job summary The Bona Vacantia Division is responsible for managing the assets of dissolved companies, the estates of individuals who die without a will or entitled kin, and other miscellaneous bona vacantia matters in England and Wales. Bona Vacantia cases arise in the following circumstances: When individuals die intestate (without a will) and have no entitled kin to inherit their estate. From the assets of companies that have been dissolved. From miscellaneous sources, such as failed trusts. The Division is notified of potential bona vacantia cases through various channels. For estates of deceased individuals, notifications primarily come from local authorities, members of the public, solicitors, and banks. For company assets, referrals of cash assets are typically made by banks and other financial institutions, while non-cash assets, such as land, are referred by a variety of sources, similar to estate referrals. Revenue generated from bona vacantia cases is transferred to our client, HM Treasury, and contributes to the Consolidated Fund for the benefit of the general exchequer. In the financial year 2023/24, we paid £86 million to HM Treasury. A key aspect of the Division's work involves managing cases and responding to public enquiries through both email and phone calls. New caseworkers are supported by a comprehensive training program before being assigned their own caseload. Job description This is an exciting opportunity to work within our Central Casework Team. The Team is a centralised team of administrative caseworkers who hold a mixed caseload covering cash balance, estates and companies work, supporting our small Legal team and senior caseworkers. A comprehensive induction and training programme is place. Once this has been completed our caseworkers are expected to work independently and collaboratively to manage their allocated cases, prioritising their workload on a daily basis. They will take shared responsibility for dealing with email and phone queries from the general public (including local authorities, financial institutions, solicitors and genealogists) Main responsibilities: Effectively manage a varied case holding, ranging from processing discretionary grant payments, returning assets to entitled owners, determining next of kin, and administering estates of those that have died intestate Draft a wide variety of correspondence and documentation, dealing promptly with fast-paced enquiries from service users and others by telephone and e-mail Support HEOs in delivering Divisional standards and deputise if required Support the wider work of the Division and contribute to ad-hoc project work as required Draft responses to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests within 20 days There may be line management responsibilities with some of the roles. Existing Civil Servants will be appointed in line with the Civil Service pay rules in place on the date of their appointment. Modernised terms and conditions will apply. Existing civil servants on level transfer will retain their current basic salary if it is within the GLD pay range. If your salary is higher than the GLD grade maxima you will be placed on the maxima of the pay range and receive the difference as a mark-time allowance, if agreed by HR. Where your salary is below GLDs grade minima you will be raised to the minima of the pay range. Any reserved rights to London Weighting or associated London allowances, will be consolidated into basic salary before the uplift to GLD grade minima. Any other allowances will not be retained on moving to GLD. If this results in your salary exceeding the pay range maxima, you will retain the difference on a mark-time basis. On promotion there will be an increase of 10% to your current basic salary, or move to the pay range minima, whichever is the highest. If you are in receipt of any reserved rights to London Weighting or associated London allowances, these will be consolidated after applying the 10% promotion calculation. After this calculation if your salary is below the minima of the pay range, you will be moved to the minima of the pay range. We operate London and National pay scales. If you voluntarily move locations your salary will be revised to reflect pay for the location. Any other allowances will not be retained on promotion or transfer. Any move to Government Legal Department from another employer will mean you can no longer access childcare vouchers. This includes moves between government departments.
