The service provides community-based support across Lancashire and Greater Manchester to adults and young people aged 14 and above with learning disabilities to empower them to enjoy the same rights and choices as everyone else. They are a forensic service which is a specialist part of mental health services supporting people who have previously committed crimes.
Job: Project Support Worker
The locations available are Manchester, Preston, Leyland & Accrington.
The service users they support have a range of needs including mental health, learning disabilities, and autism.
Services:
They rent houses from the council and then sublet these to the service users, so they are very much treated as their own homes.
* They are provided with 24-hour support, with shifts at 9am-4pm, 4pm-11pm, and sleep finishing at 9am the next day.
* There is no personal care; it is very much emotional support and encouraging them to get involved in activities – e.g. some of them go to drama classes, are part of football teams, volunteer, etc.
Further Info:
* Staff go on a 4-week rolling rota; shifts are flexible, so they don’t have to do the same set shifts every week, just as long as they have enough availability for full-time work.
* 6 weeks paid annual leave which includes sleepover enhancement.
* They have a really good training programme and will put people through NVQs. They can also do additional specialised training.
* Experience required – social care experience is not essential; they are more interested in people’s values, sense of humour, and ability to sustain boundaries with the service users. A non-judgemental attitude, patience, and an outgoing nature in terms of getting involved in activities, along with the ability to plan – lots of things to consider with risk assessments, etc.
* You will be given the service user's file to read to understand their background, which contains a lot of sensitive information, including details about their childhood and committed crimes, which can be very intense and hard to read. They do have a psychologist available for staff to consult if they are struggling to process any information.
