Volunteering in Southend with Home Start Essex
Your offer of time and support, as a volunteer, can mean the world to a family.
As a volunteer, you will make a long-lasting difference to families who need a helping hand. The benefit on children is long-term; reducing the risk of problems escalating in the future and ensures they have a happy and secure family life.
No special qualifications are necessary to become a Home-Start Essex volunteer, our volunteers bring their own life experiences. All volunteers are fully trained to support families in various roles.
About Home-Start Essex
Home-Start Essex works with parents and carers to help give their children the best possible start in life. We do this by supporting them to improve their mental health and physical health and to build their confidence in themselves and their parenting. Through support from Home-Start Essex, families are encouraged to build their networks of support, to reduce feelings of isolation or loneliness and to find ways to manage the challenges they face.

What are we looking for in a Volunteer?
1. Be prepared to complete the appropriate Home-Start Essex volunteer training course
2. Demonstrate an empathic and non-judgemental attitude towards others
3. Be reliable and understand the importance of reliability to a family receiving support
4. Have good communication skills and the ability to listen
5. Understand why families may need support from Home-Start Essex
6. Have time and enthusiasm for Home-Start Essex
7. Be prepared to attend support sessions and attend ongoing training events
What training and support do I receive?
Every volunteer must complete an appropriate training course before they volunteer with Home-Start Essex. Training will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to support our families and fulfil your volunteer role. You are supported throughout your role by a Coordinator and have support sessions with them as well as Peer Support groups and social get-togethers. Opportunities are given for ongoing training at various times throughout the year.
What can I do?
We offer a variety of volunteering opportunities, so there’s bound to be something that suits you!
There are opportunities to support families in their homes, via the phone and at our family and wellbeing groups.
Skills
Community Link Volunteer
You will support families by collecting and distributing essential items to them and/or driving families to appointments (e.g. medical appointments) if they do not have their own transport. This is a flexible volunteering role that can be combined with our other volunteering roles.
Community Link Volunteers are expected to:
1. Undertake initial training online to help prepare you for the role
2. Have their own transport they are happy to use
3. Have the correct car documentation – driving license, up-to-date MOT and insurance
1-2 hours occasionally during 9am - 5pm Weekdays
