The Health Care Assistant is part of the Primary Health Care Team and as such shares responsibility for the Treatment Room and the performance of routine nursing related duties.
Main duties of the job
Phlebotomy duties, to take and dispatch laboratory specimens including blood, urine, swabs and other diagnostic tests. Setting up the ECG machine to take ECGs. To prepare the examination areas and instruments and to assist the GPs in minor operations, coil fittings and other clinics. To support the nursing team in: Antenatal clinics, Diabetic clinics, Smoking Cessation clinics, CHD clinics, Healthy eating and weight management, Flu clinics, Minor operations, Coil and Implant clinics. To undertake basic wound care and suture/clip removal, assisting the nurses. To undertake NHS Health checks. To administer flu, pneumonia, and B12 injections. To share supervisory responsibilities with the Practice Nurses if appropriate for the management of the treatment room, stock control and ordering of drugs, leaflets and medical supplies. To ensure that all medical equipment is regularly and adequately maintained and in date and ensure that all clinical rooms are adequately stocked with medical equipment. To ensure that fridge temperatures are regularly monitored. To maintain high standards of tidiness, hygiene and safety in the use of all equipment and areas of work, in line with the Practice Health and Safety policy, Infection Control Policy as well as all other Practice policies and procedures. To undertake any additional duties as may from time to time be deemed necessary, including working across sites.

Cotswold Medical Practice comprises of two surgeries, one at Moore Health Centre in Bourton in the Water and the other at Westwoods surgery in Northleach.
Job responsibilities
Main Duties
* Carry out venepuncture procedure (taking blood samples)
* Monitoring patients INR levels and using INRStar software to give the correct dose of warfarin
* Providing smoking cessation and weight loss support
* Measuring patients height and weight.
* Take and record patients pulse.
* Taking patients blood pressure.
* Carrying out urinalysis procedure.
* Carry out simple dressings, suture and clip removal.
* Carry out B12 and influenza and pneumococcal vaccinations
* Entering consultations and other clinical data onto the computer.
* Chaperoning patients with doctors and nurses when required.
Equipment
* Collecting practice clinical waste for disposal.
* Sending medical equipment for sterilisation
* Daily maintenance of clinical areas including restocking equipment in the consulting rooms.
* Recording temperatures of clinical refrigerators
* Organising routine maintenance and calibration of clinical equipment.
Administration
* Ordering clinical consumables.
* Completing appropriate forms.
* Operate the Practice Computer system.
* Operate the Fax machine and the photocopier as necessary.
* Carry out additional tasks considered necessary by the Nurse Team Leader or Practice Manager.
Training
* The post holder will be expected to undertake training and development commensurate with the post.
* The post holder will be expected to participate in regular practice meetings and training events.
* Training in practice procedures and the use of the practice computer system will be provided on commencement.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* A good level of general education and NVQ level 3 in Care, or similar HCA qualification.
* The post holder will be expected to undertake training and development commensurate with the post.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
