Job overview
The Ophthalmology Department cares for patients of all ages attending a wide range of ophthalmic clinics. We have Doctor/Nurse led clinics on all sites.
Within this post you will work in general Ophthalmology clinics and more specialised ophthalmic clinics, preoperative assessment and support the organisation and running theatre lists on a day to day basis, providing the opportunity to cover all different aspects of Ophthalmic Care.
You will undergo in-house training specialising in Ophthalmic Nursing care.
You will be expected to complete the ophthalmic competencies required to work in the department.
Main duties of the job
1. Work in support of and under the direction of a registered nurse, providing nursing care and assistance to patients within defined parameters specified by the Registered Nurse (RN).
2. Provide basic patient care and document that care in the patient records.
3. Perform agreed clinical tasks, clerical duties, and phlebotomy.
4. Participate in working flexible hours to meet the needs of the service, including evenings and weekends.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units, and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre for non-life-threatening conditions.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery.

Person specification
Education and Qualifications
* Basic literacy and numeracy skills
* Willingness to undertake NVQ level 3 in a care-related area
Experience
* Manual handling of patients, using lifting aids
* Previous experience in a care environment
* Awareness of the NHS structure and current issues
Skills
* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively (to understand and be understood).
* Basic IT skills
* Good hygiene skills (e.g., food handling, hand washing).
* Some knowledge or awareness of Ophthalmic care.
