Ward 34 is a 26 bedded oncology/haematology ward within the Northern Centre for Cancer Care which delivers a variety of treatments to both inpatient and day case patients. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Sister to join the team.
Ward 34 specialises in the care of Teenage and Young Adult inpatients, day cases and direct emergency reviews.
The ward provides care for patients with a variety of oncological and haematological malignancies requiring administration of systemic anti-cancer treatment (SACT), radiotherapy, nutritional support or symptom control so the suitable individual would benefit from having experience within this setting.
You will work closely with the both the Senior Sister and Band 6 Sister and be able to support them in the safe running of the ward. We are looking for someone who is an excellent team player who has a positive attitude to work.
It is essential that the candidate sets high standards in their care delivery and represent themselves as a role model for both the team and Trust.

Main duties of the job
We are looking for a forward-thinking, dynamic nurse who is keen to develop their leadership and management skills and has a passion for service improvement.
As a Junior Sister it is essential you hold a recognised qualification in SACT administration and have completed the Practice Assessor accreditation, as teaching and supporting junior staff and students is an essential part of the role.
You will also need to be highly motivated and able to demonstrate excellent clinical and interpersonal skills.
* UKONS SACT Competence
* Practice Assessor
* Significant experience with Oncology/Haematology including in-depth knowledge of SACT regimes.
* Clinical skills- including venepuncture, cannulation, IV drug administration and CVC management.
* Previous Band 6 experience/or regular nurse in charge experience.
Our working hours are 07:30-20:15/19:30-08:15 with expectation that you will rotate onto nights/weekends to cover a 7-day service.
Job responsibilities
* To support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP, acting as a deputy when the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP is absent.
* Provide effective support and leadership to both staff, patients and carers within the Theatre or Department.
* Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students.
* Ensure systems are in place to provide the continuity of safe effective care for patients at all times.
* Effective member of the multi-disciplinary team
* May be required to participate in an On-call rota as required.

Person Specification
KNOWLEDGE
* Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of ongoing professional development
* Understanding of professional accountability in a leadership role
* Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context
* Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding
* Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) / Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) requirements for mentorship if relevant to role
SKILLS
* Relevant clinical skills relating to the specialty e.g. cannulation/ IV drug administration / scrub skills relevant to speciality / anaesthetic skills appropriate to speciality
EXPERIENCE
* Specialist qualification if relevant to role or previous experience
* Relevant and recent clinical experience
* Audit / research experience
QUALIFICATIONS
* Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch) / Operating Department Practitioner
* Current NMC / HCPC registration
* Diploma in a health related subject, prepared to take degree level study
* Degree in health related subject
