Job Title : Consultant in Adult Psychiatry Grade : Consultant Hours : 40 hours per week Location : Chester, Cheshire Rate : Competitive, to be discussed upon application An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Adult Psychiatry to join our esteemed NHS client’s dynamic inpatient team based in Chester, Cheshire. This position is available for an immediate start, offering competitive rates. Key Responsibilities : The post-holder will be responsible for delivering consultant psychiatric input to patients referred to and admitted to PICU and provide medical input into SPA, in line with the agreed Acute Service Operational Policy. This includes providing senior medical input to PICU, ensuring safe and timely service provision for service users, taking Consultant and RC responsibility for service users in PICU, providing intensive and expert intervention and management of service users with acute, chronic and severely enduring mental illness in line with the acute inpatient and PICU care pathway, working flexibly and creatively as part of a multidisciplinary team promoting informed risk taking and anti-discriminatory practice, liaising with both internal and external interfaces concerning admissions and transfers/discharges, liaising with the Consultant Psychiatrists working in the inpatient and community settings concerning admissions and transfers/discharges, offering expert risk assessment and management skills, ensuring that a high quality safe clinical service is provided to all service users by working in partnership with MDT, ward manager and other senior managers, ensuring excellence in the provision of medical and psychiatric assessments to all referred service users to the service including using risk assessment protocols, ensuring excellence in the delivery of evidence-based treatments, working in partnership with the PICU ward manager and being jointly responsible for matters related to clinical governance and financial management, monitoring length of stay, and providing cover for the other Consultants when they are on leave. The post-holder will be expected to work effectively with colleagues from other professional disciplines in the team and to deliver services in a way consistent with the Trust policy for the Care Programme Approach. The post-holder is also expected to liaise effectively with the other general and specialist teams operating in CWP to ensure effective handover of care when patients transfer between teams as part of the patient pathway. General duties include managing, appraising and giving professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the medical director and in accordance with the Trust’s personnel policies and procedures, which may include assessing competences under the Modernising Medical Careers framework, ensuring that junior medical staff working with the post holder operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant, undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients, recording clinical activity accurately and comprehensively, and submitting this promptly to the Information Department, participating in service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service, participating in annual appraisal for consultants, attending and participating in the academic programme of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme, maintaining professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and abiding by professional codes of conduct, participating annually in a job plan review with the clinical manager, which will include consultation with a relevant manager in order to ensure that the post is developed to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernisation, working with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services, and sharing with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management, complying with the Trust’s agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and taking an active role in the financial management of the service and supporting the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services. External duties, roles and responsibilities include the Trust actively supporting the involvement of the consultant body in regional and national groups subject to discussion and approval with the medical director and, as necessary, the chief executive officer. Other duties may include carrying out such other duties as may be assigned, with agreement, by the Trust. It is expected that the post holder will not unreasonably withhold agreement to any reasonable proposed changes that the Trust might make. Qualifications and Experience : Relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Psychiatry. Full registration with the appropriate professional body. Section 12 approval. Expertise in psychiatric assessments and interventions. A high level of clinical skills as evidenced by peer review and reports. Evidence of incorporating core values of commitment, trust, integrity, and kindness into their work with others. Willingness to work flexibly across a range of clinic models, venues, and days of the week. Good communication skills and level of IT literacy. An interest to advance professionally as evidenced by attendance and contribution to reflective practice meetings, reliability meetings, and/or other CPD events within their professional clinical practice. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
