Your new role, what's involved?
Are you a pro-active chartered structural engineer based in the East of England and looking for your next career move? We have an amazing opportunity working in partnership with Norfolk County Council looking after some of Britain’s most iconic structures; from the Medieval Potter Heigham bridge in the Broads National Park to the ultra-modern third river crossing bascule bridge in Great Yarmouth.
The successful candidate will be able to work flexibly, but as a team leader will be required to work in County Hall, Norwich in line with client requirements.
As the Senior Structures Engineer you will provide leadership, vision, and strategic direction to the team, enabling the delivery of good quality, value for money services, allowing efficient travel throughout the county.
You will be responsible for discharging the Council’s statutory duties aimed at protecting all users and maintaining our infrastructure in a safe, sustainable, and efficient manner whilst achieving customer focused outcomes for Norfolk.
Leading a team of around 13 people, you will be responsible for:
1. Project delivery of all Bridge schemes, each up to around £5m in value, using excellent strategic project and programme management skills, ensuring that the desired benefits are achieved, and the Councils reputation is protected.
2. Providing, setting, and adhering to guidance on relevant policies, statutory requirements, legal documents, and technical standards, ensuring advice and decisions are both current and legal. Reporting on resource, cost, or risk implications as part of the Highways & Waste group processes.
3. Directly representing the Highway Authority as technical advisor and expert on infrastructure, ensuring effective discharge of the Council’s Technical Approval Authority obligations.
Our Highways team in Norwich is growing rapidly to meet the significant workload we have secured and offers excellent opportunities for the right candidate.
We'd love to hear from you if you have:
1. A degree in Civil Engineering or another construction related profession.
2. Chartered professional with good knowledge of structures and risk management.
3. Excellent interpersonal skills, enabling effective communication at all levels, successful negotiation with all stakeholders, including the ability to explain issues clearly.
4. Extensive knowledge of the assessment tools necessary to effectively manage and mitigate risk.
5. Ability to manage staff and motivate people.
6. Sound knowledge and understanding of technical and environmental standards, relevant legislation, and regulations, in particular health and safety.
7. Good knowledge of health and safety, including CDM requirements.
8. Flexible and pragmatic approach to problem solving with evidence of the ability to develop practical and creative solutions.
9. Knowledge of Political and County Council priorities and objectives.
10. Must have a current Driving License.
