Position Summary
The Manager, Alumni Relations reports to the Executive Director Foundation & Director College Advancement and has a focus to engage with alumni and strengthen their role in advancing institution goals. This position is responsible for overall direction of the Alumni Relations portfolio, including strategic planning, fiscal management, human resources and program development. This position is responsible for inspiring the alumni community to remain connected and involved with Vancouver Community College and for building, strengthening and maximizing their goodwill, relationships with and financial support for the College.
Duties & Responsibilities
* Formulates and recommends a Strategic Plan for alumni relations designed to support the delivery of programming and services that promote stronger links between alumni, VCC and the VCC Foundation.
* Establishes and maintains regular contact with all VCC Departments, working closely with faculty, staff, and volunteers, to plan, develop and implement programs, services, events, and activities of interest that benefit and increase the profile of VCC alumni.
* Develops strategies and executes specific alumni-focused fundraising appeals, working in collaboration with the Executive Director of the VCC Foundation.
* Develops, negotiates and administers other revenue-generating programs for VCC alumni such as affinity partnerships.
* Prepares, presents and recommends to the Director College Advancement the annual operating budgets for Alumni Relations, based on the objectives stated in the Strategic Plan. Ensures adherence to the budgets throughout the year.
* Directs, develops, evaluates and maintains communication, marketing and public relations initiatives and materials related to Alumni and associated programs.
* Works with the Marketing and Communications team to create and implement a communications strategy that amplifies and increases the profile of VCC alumni through newsletters, news stories, website updates, and social media plan.
* Investigates and submits nominations for recognition programs (internal and external) that increase the profile of VCC alumni.
* Manages all aspects of alumni benefits, programs, services and activities including defining the responsibilities of volunteer committees, creating job descriptions for volunteers, and planning meetings.
* Represents the College at alumni events and activities and works with other members of the VCC Foundation to ensure appropriate representation and enhance a positive and prominent profile of the College at celebrations, ceremonies, events and activities.
* Develops, manages and executes Alumni-focused special events, including alumni milestones such as anniversaries, homecomings, alumni gatherings/events and other activities that actively engage the VCC community. Leads, hosts and supports events such as the Outstanding Alumni Awards, Red Seal Recognition, Convocation and Flourish.
* Liaises with the Office of the Registrar to access and maintain the use of alumni data for new graduates while maintaining and overseeing the development and maintenance of the alumni database, ensuring the confidentiality of records and the integration of alumni donors into giving programs.
* Manages human resources for the portfolio including staff and volunteers.
* Supervises assigned staff and participates in the recruitment, promotion, evaluation, training and development, and performance management of staff within scope defined by College policy and Collective Agreements. Participates in staffing decisions related to recruitment, performance evaluation, retention, discipline, and termination.
* Provides assigned staff and volunteers with interpretation of policies and procedures, training and orientation, making adjustments to workload and assignments as required.
* Creates and maintains network with other Post-Secondary alumni leaders and memberships and involvement with appropriate alumni-related organizations (e.g. CCAE).
* Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
* A Bachelor’s Degree in communications, leadership, marketing, fundraising, public relations, or related discipline from a recognized educational institution.
* Five (5) years of directly related recent experience directing volunteer activities in non-profit organizations including two (2) years working with senior-level volunteers in a Board environment.
* Or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
* Demonstrated ability to strategize, build and implement constituency programs and activities, and motivate volunteers.
* Demonstrated ability to take initiative and be flexible in approach with internal/external stakeholders.
* Ability to work well independently and in a team environment to achieve institutional goals.
* Demonstrated ability to generate revenue, lead fundraising appeals and identify prospects for major gift fundraising.
* Familiarity and competence with fundraising CRMs, research skills and accounting procedures.
* Excellent project management skills.
* Superior oral, written, editorial and presentation skills.
* Demonstrated ability to supervise, motivate and mentor staff and volunteers.
Salary Range - Prorated based on FTE
$79,731 – $106,308 – $116,939 annualized (Pay Grid 9) normal starting salary placement is between $79,731 and $106,308. Compensation beyond the control/mid-point requires approval by the Public Sector Employer’s Council Secretariat ( PSEC ).
