Fixed term contract / secondment opportunity for 2 years
We are looking for a new Clinical Nurse Specialist to join the Oncology Department here at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital (NNUH).
You will manage a specified case load of patients, providing information and support, to enable patients to make informed choices about their care and understand the rational of investigations and treatments.
You will work closely with the Consultants, medical and nursing staff, multi-disciplinary team and Heads of Department within the Directorate.
You will ensure that patients are seen within recommended time scales and targets where these are in place.

Main duties of the job
As post holder you will provide a comprehensive service for patients within the specialist area of care. To provide direct patient care and support in helping improve quality of life by educating the patient on the management and control of symptoms and offering support following diagnosis. You will be a resource for other health professionals.
You will provide and promote a high standard of professional care at all times whilst upholding and influencing professional and Trust values. You will also develop, implement and evaluate care packages for a specialist group of patients.

Job responsibilities
14. To visit inpatients as appropriate to ensure continuity of care and to give advice/ support.
15. To accept referrals from medical/nursing staff both within and outside the Trust, of newly diagnosed and existing patients
16. To periodically review caseload and to discharge patients appropriately within divisional guidelines
17. To respond to telephone enquiries and co-ordinate admission or changes in appointment dates as warranted by the patients clinical condition, including operation of a telephone helpline for the relevant speciality if required.
18. To undertake a comprehensive assessment of the patients symptoms and in liaison with the Medical team organise investigations as required.
19. To supply and/or administer medication according to Patient Group Directions or in accordance with the Trusts Prescribing Policy for registered nurse prescribers.
20. To monitor the effectiveness and efficacy of treatments/drug therapy and implement any changes necessary.
21. To monitor side effects and discuss appropriate changes and alternative therapy / treatments with the relevant Consultant/GP.
22. To obtain informed consent for specific procedures in line with relevant Trust policies and protocols ensuring full explanation is given and consent obtained prior to the procedures.
23. To perform clinical interventions and diagnostic tests as the post requires once training has been given, following and applying correct protocols to ensure safe practice within the sphere of the specialist nurse role.
24. To provide ongoing support for newly diagnosed and existing patients, their family and carers
25. To communicate sensitive condition related information effectively with patients and carers in a timely and understandable manner, using different communication methods to clarify understanding.
26. To liaise with other Specialists Nurses, Consultants, GPs, Dieticians, other members of the MDT, voluntary agencies, National charities, other agencies within and outside the Trust.
27. To work as an autonomous practitioner responsible for managing and prioritising own workload against the needs of patients and service requirements
28. To assist the Line Manager in the provision of clinical and managerial leadership and support of all nursing and clerical staff
29. To deputise for senior colleagues in their absence as required
