Experience of motivating, supervising and developing people
Experience of developing collaborative partnerships with relevant learning organisations, agencies and educational establishments

This is a busy role and you will need to be comfortable working on your own initiative, able to balance various demands on your time. You will have a keen interest in museums, arts and heritage and will be an enthusiastic advocate for our work.
About the role:
This is a fixed-term contract due to end 31/03/2026, with the possibility of this being extended if external funding is secured.
The Skills Development Officer is responsible for devising, planning and delivering programmes of work that help people from all parts of society develop their skills and careers in the cultural and creative sector.
These include RAMM’s Future Skills programme and its Youth Panel, as well as student placements, school work experience and supported placements.
The role involves recruiting and supervising placements; delivering training; mentoring, motivating and inspiring participants and evaluating the outcomes of the programmes.
Reporting to the Audience Development Manager, this is an exciting opportunity, with huge scope for someone who wants to make an impact within an outstanding museum.
Whilst the job title of this post is ‘officer’, this role is the equivalent of a manager-level position outside of the local government sector.
About the team:
RAMM is Exeter’s world-class museum, a place of discovery which encourages everyone to be curious. Its fascinating displays reveal Devon and Exeter’s rich history and global connections. Visitors are delighted by exotic animals, birds and insects and a changing programme of exhibitions, events and contemporary art commissions, inspired by the museum’s collections.
Welcoming 220,000 visitors each year, RAMM has a proven track record of making its collections accessible to visitors, both physically and online. In 2012 RAMM won the much-coveted Art Fund ‘Museum of the Year’ award in recognition of the innovative and thoughtful way the collection was redisplayed. When presenting the award, Lord Chris Smith described the galleries as, ‘some of the most intelligently considered displays on view in any museum in the UK’. RAMM’s World Cultures collection and part of its Natural Sciences collection are Designated, a mark of distinction which recognises their national and international significance.
RAMM is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. It aims to use its local and global collections to connect people to the world and inspire them to shape a better future.
Skills development sits within the museum’s Audience Development Team and the role reports to the Audience Development Manager. The team is responsible for programmes that ensure everyone, whatever their background, feels welcome in the museum.
