Senior Research Engineer - Systems Engineer
We are looking for a Senior Research Engineer – Systems Engineering to join our Advanced Production Systems (APS) Team.
The Senior Research Engineer – Systems Engineering role is primarily focused on technical delivery of complex, system-level projects and development of systems engineering activities across The MTC. You will work across various technology departments, industrial sectors, and customers.
Duties and Responsibilities
Activities in the role will likely include:
1. Technical project and systems engineering leadership to ensure work meets or exceeds agreed customer requirements. Including working with project managers and engineering resources to deliver projects within agreed scope, budget, and timescales. Projects and work packages typically have budgets of £100k to £2m over timeframes of 3months to 2.5 years.
2. Technical delivery of projects aimed to support UK-based customers with the industrialisation and scale-up (Technology Readiness Level, TRL 5+) of their manufacturing plant and their products. The role has the potential to work across a wide range of industrial sectors, with a primary focus in Aerospace and Defence.
3. Depending on experience, specific tasks could include: Systems Engineering Process Development & Quality improvements.Leading Systems Engineering activities on multiple challenging projectsProviding guidance and support to colleagues on the systems engineering aspects of their project roleSupporting customers in the completion of their systems engineering tasks
4. Providing technical governance, including nurturing earlier-career stage engineers in their technical development
5. Supporting Senior Managers with a proactive approach in the identification, technical specification, and delivery of new and novel technology capability into the MTC, its customers, or industrial members premises
6. Working with The MTC’s stakeholders to define and propose project ideas for internal, industrial, or Collaborative Research & Development (CR&D) funding streams.

7. A track record of both verbal and written technical communication, tailoring communication style for different audiences (for example across different areas of the business)
8. Experience with partner and supplier liaison – for example with customers & partners, including collaborating directly with customers during project delivery, acting as a technical liaison.
9. Demonstrable use of coaching and mentoring to support colleagues and transfer knowledge in area of expertise to others within own department and wider MTC colleagues.
10. Creative problem-solving abilities, with an analytical approach to implementation.
11. Experience in product development, design, industrialisation of technologies and/or manufacturing in an production environment.
12. Hold a degree, or equivalent experience or qualification in an engineering discipline.
13. Promoting teamwork, supporting through difficult times and collectively celebrating our successes.
14. Applies a pragmatic approach to achieving project objectives and can adapt to the needs of the situation.
Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience
15. Experience of applying Systems Engineering approaches, including all phases of the system development lifecycle, in a product development, design, industrialisation of technologies and/or manufacturing environment, particularly on Defence or Aerospace projects.
16. Experience of defining and leading Systems Engineering activities on large-scale complex projects, for example, systems with bespoke control schemes, novel technologies, complex interfaces, multiple suppliers and/or partners, safety critical systems.
17. Experience of manufacturing plant, assembly or production lines and manufacturing processes
18. Experience developing and implementing processes aligned with BS ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288:2023
19. Experience in functional safety, fault trees and safety assessments
20. Experience of design, development and realisation of system prototypes and system test rigs
21. Engineering competence in wide range of engineering disciplines such as Electrical, Mechanical, Software, Electronics, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Simulation Modelling, to facilitate appropriate technical leadership of these functions at system level.
22. Familiar with FMEAs, robust engineering practices and supporting techniques.
