Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.
The purpose of this post is to provide expert opinion on patients with neurological disorders, specifically patients with neuromuscular disorders. The appointee will be expected to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to them at the regional neurosciences centre. The post holder will be responsible for performing peripheral neurophysiological investigations including nerve conduction studies, electromyographic (EMG) examinations, specialised quantitative EMG studies and also for interpreting routine and more complex specialised electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings, including neonatal EEG, sleep-deprived EEG, short and long-term video-EEG telemetry, home video-EEG telemetry, MSLT, MWT, PSG and ambulatory EEG recordings and muscle ultrasound.

As a clinical neurophysiology department hosting Specialist Trainees (STs), both academic and non-academic, and healthcare scientists enrolled on the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP) the provision of supervision, teaching and hands-on training to STs and Scientists will be a core component of the role of consultant in the department.
The post holder will be expected to attend the weekly neuroscience educational / audit meetings and will be able to participate in the Neurology Grand Round for the purposes of internal CPD. The post-holder will be expected to take part in the weekly diagnostic and advisory MDT as part of the HSS and contribute to the diagnostic pathway of complex neuromuscular patients. The successful candidate will also participate in an annual appraisal. The post holder will be expected to meet the requirements of continuing professional development in accordance with the Royal College of Physicians.
