Role Purpose The role is suited to a degree qualified mechanical engineer (or equivalent) who will be supporting the design and delivery of the Rolls-Royce SMR modularisation kit of parts including modular frames, barriers, drainage, and flooring. As part of the Modularisation team. You will work within a core team responsible for the delivery of a standardised modular system, performing optioneering studies to determine optimal design, manufacturing, and construction solutions in keeping with the SMR modular build philosophy. As a senior member of the team, you will be expected to guide and mentor junior engineers to help them develop their full potential. Concept and design development of design solutions for the Rolls-Royce SMR modular frames or supporting kit of parts including barriers, drainage, and flooring. Design of work packages to applicable standards and internal hazard requirements. Rolls-Royce SMR Design Process revolves around a Definition Review (DR) governance process that assesses the functional design development of systems, structures, or components via staged DR gates. Success will be measured by achieving staged DR gate approval within the agreed project delivery timescales. Contribution to Rolls-Royce SMR Generic Design Assessment approval. Development and underpinning of a novel modular design approach and implementation into a new industry. Own packages of work to develop solutions with diverse stakeholders and progress through the Rolls-Royce SMR technical governance process. Be a key part of an innovative team to drive change into the industry. Training & Qualifications Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline with at least 8 years post graduate industry experience or has relevant work experience. Criteria 1 This role will require technical design experience in some or all the following: Experience in the use of mechanical design packages. (NX, Inventor) Structural/Civil Engineering experience or integration awareness - Modularisation, Steel frame experience and calculations etc. Knowledge of design for protection against internal hazards. Design for X activities. Sound knowledge of the principles of design modularisation and standardisation. Experience of implementing new processes and change in a highly regulated industry. Criteria 2 Experience in the development of design solutions from initial concept through to detailed design definition using a robust Design Process, this will include experience of DfX and trade-off / optioneering studies to ensure an optimum design solution is achieved. Utilising the systems engineering approach to design. Criteria 3 Proven experience in the delivery of complex mechanical or structural design solutions with diverse stakeholders and requirements, with proven experience working through ambiguity and challenging the status quo to do something in a new and different way. Criteria 4 Applicants should be able to demonstrate competence with the application of codes and standards through design, safety case engineering, requirements management, systems engineering methods, and verification and validation. Criteria 5 This role will require knowledge/experience in some or all the following: Desirable experience of requirements management processes. (DOORS) Project management of local plans to work to deliverables milestones. (MS Project) Definition Review (DR) process knowledge. Experience of working collaboratively with partners and suppliers. Pay and Benefits We anticipate paying a salary of between £55,000 & £65,000, plus:- Bonus - Performance related bonus of up to 12.5% Benefits Allowance - £2,200, enabling you to create a bespoke package Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
