A bit about me:
I am looking for someone to support my mother who has FTD (Frontotemporal Dementia). She lives with my father who is currently her full-time carer, but he needs assistance with this. My mum was diagnosed in 2022 and has had a rapid decline since. She is very withdrawn nowadays and is not keen to leave her bedroom or interact much with others. She is still able to hold some conversation and once she has got to know someone, she will be keen to chat, she can get lonely and enjoys any company. She enjoys colouring, listening to music, and talking about her family.
About the role:
We are looking for someone who can assist with personal care i.e. showering, teeth brushing, getting dressed, and sometimes toileting. She can be very stubborn and anxious around showers and washing so trust will need to be built up over time. Dementia has caused her to revert to child-like behaviours, so she needs a lot of patience and reassurance. Helping my dad with everyday household jobs would also be ideal as he struggles to stay on top of cleaning. It would be great also to just have someone to keep her company and to engage with her and encourage to get out of her bedroom and potentially out of the house. Although with the hours only being minimal at the moment the most important thing is to help with showers and other aspects of personal care.
The kind of person I am looking for:
I am keen to find someone who has experience in caring for someone with dementia and assisting with personal care as this is the hardest part in caring for her. They will need to be friendly, reliable, and trustworthy. They need to be patient and understanding not only with my mum but also with my dad as we have not had good experiences of care in the past. A driver's license and access to a car are essential if the opportunity comes to take her out of the house as she is reluctant to walk long distances. They will also need to be confident with being alone in the house with her in case my dad wants or needs to go out.
