Head of Safety, Health and Environment (SHE)
Location: Flexible (with national travel), Ideally Midlands.
Hybrid role, need to visit offices in Midlands/London 1 day per week (4 days WFH)

Role Purpose:
As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Head of SHE is responsible for devising, implementing and leading the company's Health, Safety and Environmental strategy, driving a culture where SHE is front of mind with everyone (employees, contractors and visitors) every day, and in which everyone feels responsible, capable, and empowered to take action to protect their own Health & Safety as well that of their work colleagues.
Leading a team of SHE professionals, as well as integrated teams across the business, the role is very hands-on but equally strategic in the development and implementation of initiatives for the continual development of their Health & Safety culture and performance across the business.
The role is broad and is accountable for setting the SHE strategy, ensuring reflective of organisational change, transformation, and M&A activity. The role positions as a leader in acting responsibly, adopting learning and innovation through continuous improvement and ensures our client is focussed on its most material compliance risks with robust plans to mitigate and exceed the standard.
Key Accountabilities
* Ensure that the business operates in compliance with all relevant Health, Safety & Environmental legislation, through the development, refinement, and management of its management system, policies, and procedures, that ensure the Health & Safety of all group employees, contractors, and visitors.
* In collaboration with peers in the Senior Management Team, develop a culture across all locations of the business, and across all levels of the business, where Health & Safety is front of mind with everyone (employees, contractors, and visitors) every day, in which everyone feels responsible, capable, and empowered to take action to protect their own Health & Safety as well that of their work colleagues.
* Use all available communication channels to promote this culture.
* The role is accountable for driving our client’s safety culture through the leadership of a team of safety professionals enabling our build and operations teams deliver projects safely.
* Ensure compliance to statutory obligations for Occupational Health and Safety and Construction Design and management (CDM) Regulations, reporting to Risk and Audit Committee where required.
* Establish and lead Safety Assurance Programme across Build and Operations.
* Identify and address capability and knowledge gaps, within the Head of Health & Safety's direct team as well as directors, managers, team leaders and supervisors across the business, to enable the whole business to feel responsible, empowered, and capable in driving improvements to protect their own Health & Safety as well as that of their work colleagues.
Job Role:
* Lead crisis management efforts during major health, safety and environment emergencies or incidents, in conjunction with the wider safety team, ensuring appropriate reporting and documentation of all incidents in accordance with legal requirements.
* Identify and address capability and knowledge gaps, within the Head of Health & Safety's direct team as well as directors, managers, team leaders and supervisors across the business, to enable the whole business to feel responsible, empowered, and capable in driving improvements to protect their own Health & Safety as well as that of their work colleagues.
* Refine existing Health & Safety metrics, to measure and drive continuous improvement, and report on these monthly to Executive Team and the Board.
* Evaluate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, and develop and implement actions to mitigate the risk of their re-occurrence or their escalation into more serious incidents and accidents.
* Lead crisis management efforts during major health, safety and environment emergencies or incidents, in conjunction with the wider safety team, ensuring appropriate reporting and documentation of all incidents in accordance with legal requirements.
* Ensure compliance to the ISO 45001 policies and procedures and provide technical authorship to improve policies and procedures.
* Drive continuous improvement activity with regards to incident reduction and compliance with regulatory requirements, targeting zero reportable incidents to the Health and Safety Executive and EA and enforcing this culture across the organisation.
* Working in collaboration with Director of Supply chain to drive fit for purpose contractual arrangements pertaining to compliance including due diligence and contractual requirements.
* Create a culture of continuous improvement across compliance functions, positioning our client as leaders in the industry e.g., through SHiFT, HSE, EA etc.
* Own, on behalf of Chief Delivery Officer the divisional risk management framework ensuring quarterly governance, escalation, and relevant risk mitigation plans in place.
* Contribute to strategic priorities for ESG on behalf of build and operations at ESG board committee.
Qualifications:
* Chartered IOSH
* Qualified to NEBOSH Diploma/NVQ Level 5 Diploma level, with evidence of CPD (through IOSH)
* Experience of ISO 45001 with auditing experience
* MSc or post graduate qualified in a science or engineering discipline (Desirable)
* Formal senior leadership qualification (Desirable)
Knowledge & Experience:
* Substantial experience in similar roles with demonstrable success in leading a Health & Safety cultural transformation in a multi-location utility, construction or telecoms business.
* Proven senior leader with an exceptional track record.
* The ability to operate in a highly complex environment with multiple stakeholders.
* Demonstrable experience of building high performing inclusive teams and of developing diverse talent.
* A high degree of resilience, the ability to deal with ambiguity, and excellent communication skills are all essential attributes.
