To provide a venepuncture service within the Trust in accordance with UHP and departmental policies and procedures. To liaise with patients, carers, nursing and medical staff in an appropriate and professional manner. Informing patients of the venepuncture procedure to be carried out in a caring reassuring manner that is aimed at their level of understanding. Ensure suitable stocks of venepuncture equipment are available prior to visiting patients and replenish used stock as required. Ensure that requests for blood are correctly filled in with the minimum acceptance data present. Ensure that all samples collected are correctly labelled and meet the acceptance criteria for the Pathology department concerned. Have the ability to assess if veins are suitable for venepuncture, following standard operating procedures. Eg Avoiding Intra Venous/transfusion sites. Recognise the needs of the patient, who may be very anxious or distressed due to the nature of their illness or the procedure, whilst being sympathetic and considerate towards them. Will assist the training officer in the training of new staff. Be familiar and competent in the use of Pathology computer systems iLAB & iCM for patient test request entry.
