The Risk and Assurance Manager will be part of the safety, licensing and assurance function, reporting to the Safety License and Assurance (SLA) Director, who is responsible for all aspects of nuclear safety and assurance interface management requirements. The SLA function is accountable for the setting of standards and strategies for delivery to meet GBN’s HSSEQ policies, including risk and assurance, regulatory, consents, licensing and permitting and quality.
The Risk and Assurance Manager will take ownership of the SMR Project assurance model, and relationship with wider GBN risk, assurance and audit functions. They will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to assess both project and operational risks, proactively manage risk mitigation approaches, and oversee the implementation of assurance frameworks to ensure they are robust, effective, and aligned with the SMR project’s goals and regulatory requirements.
You will form part of the establishment of a major programme. This will provide you with an opportunity to be part of a team ensuring successful delivery of a First of a Kind (FOAK) UK SMR Project, helping to ensure it minimises its environmental impact whilst delivering cost-effective energy capacity. Whilst this is a fast-paced and exciting challenge, you will need to be comfortable with uncertainty, ambiguity and change.
Responsibilities:
* Lead on the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive risk management framework and arrangements for the SMR project.
* Establish risk governance processes, risk appetite statements, and risk thresholds in collaboration with the Safety, Licensing, and Assurance Lead.
* Conduct quantitative and qualitative risk assessments, including probabilistic risk assessments (PRA) and failure mode effects analysis (FMEA), to evaluate technical, operational, financial, and regulatory risks, engaging with cost and schedule estimating representatives as required.
* Own the projects risk register, capturing all identified risks with appropriate mitigation actions, timescales, and ownership assigned.
* Develop and implement effective risk mitigation strategies in partnership with engineering, safety, and project management teams.
* Monitor and report on the effectiveness of risk management actions, ensuring continuous risk mitigation throughout the project.
* Track key risk indicators (KRIs) and lead regular risk review meetings with project teams and senior management.
* Oversee the implementation of multidisciplinary assurance frameworks to monitor compliance with nuclear safety, regulatory, environmental, and quality standards.
* Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams regarding assurance reports for senior management, ensuring key findings, risks, and recommendations for improvement are done to standard.
* Responsible for the coordination of multidisciplinary project adherence towards relevant nuclear regulatory requirements, working closely with regulatory bodies such as the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and the Environment Agency (EA).
* Support the preparation of submissions to regulatory authorities, ensuring that risk and assurance processes meet approval standards.
* Ensure that project and operational risks are appropriately integrated into project planning, scheduling, and execution phases.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:
* Extensive experience in risk management and compliance roles within nuclear or high-hazard industries.
* Demonstrated experience in managing risk and assurance for complex large-scale projects, ideally within the nuclear, energy or high-hazard industries.
* Strong knowledge of nuclear safety and regulatory frameworks, including those set by the ONR, IAEA, EA, and other international bodies.
* Experience with risk management tools, software, and methodologies, including probabilistic risk assessment (PRA), fault tree analysis (FTA), and event tree analysis (ETA).
* In-depth knowledge of risk management standards such as ISO 31000, ISO 9001, and project risk management best practices.
* Strong analytical skills, with experience in conducting detailed risk assessments and developing mitigation strategies.
* Experience using digital/software to manage and communicate live risk positions.
* Familiarity with nuclear regulatory environments and experience interacting with regulatory bodies.
* Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact and explain complex processes with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* The capability to embrace change and uncertainty and welcome the emergent aspect of the job.
* Ability to foster a collaborative and supportive environment, whilst developing team members’ skills and capabilities.
* Ability to work in a collaborative, multi-party environment at pace.
Qualifications:
* A bachelor’s degree in risk management, engineering, nuclear science, business, project management, or a related field. A master’s degree or equivalent qualification is preferred.
* Certified Risk Management Professional (CRMP), Project Management Professional (PMP), Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) or equivalent certification.
