Fluency in English is a poor metric for measuring one's integration into the local community. AFGC was founded on the belief that First Generation Asians are often overlooked when it comes to integration, while it is not in one's culture to actively speak out even when help is needed.
We are a new Charity aiming to empower the Asian community in the UK, especially those whose families did not grow up locally. We provide 3 main opportunities for our beneficiaries, that would otherwise be already available to our local counterparts:
* Knowledge Sharing
* Social events and bonding
* Career advice and networking
While our board of Trustees have grown the community massively since AFGC's launch 12 months ago, we are now looking for a passionate and motivated team to bring this mission further.
Responsibilities
You will be contributing through all or some of these workstreams, depending on your availability:
* Consistent, well-organised events
Currently, we run events once every 2-3 weeks. These include sports meetups (e.g. badminton), after-work networking, and festivity celebrations (e.g. Easter). You will work with various volunteers to make sure these events are well organised for the anticipated number of people, and that details are communicated timely. In the near future, we are aiming to start running workshops and fundraising events, so your ideas will be very appreciated!
* Community building
We do not have a physical location, thus digital engagement is key. You will define what ideal looks like in our major channels and come up with strategies to keep the community engaged. You will also lead the expansion of our target demographic, working with societies / universities / clubs and managing our social media presence.
* Knowledge sharing
Not everyone can come to our events, yet we do not want them to miss out on conversations that could have really impacted their lives. You will take charge of defining how our online knowledge database gets populated and maintained. On the other hand, we also need an internal knowledge bank for our volunteers. From training documents to safeguarding policies, you will make sure people know where to find them.
* You will take the steering wheel
While advised by the board of Trustees on our vision, you essentially have full liberty to execute our vision in a way you see fit. From team structure to fundraising, and even how you want to shape your role with us, you will be the one leading these decisions.
Qualifications
While similar roles typically look for experience in fundraising, project management, and stakeholder relationships, we prioritise who you are as a person:
* You resonate with our vision.
* You uphold your commitments.
* You are trustworthy and do not take shortcuts.
* You do not shy away from difficult conversations.
What do you get
Our board of trustees and professional network members all come from highly productive and ambitious backgrounds in Finance, Consulting, and Startups. You will have direct access to our mentorship, personalised development plan, and industry insights. While AFGC is not open to external funding at the moment, your expenses will be covered and compensation can be arranged once funding is present.
Note: As this is a volunteering role, no visa sponsorship is required, meaning anyone on any type of visa status can apply for this role.
This role could be flexible to suit your needs, both in terms of hours and responsibilities. You will tell us what human resources are required to execute our vision! As such, we welcome candidates of all sorts of backgrounds, even recent graduates.
