Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Cellular Pathology
Cellular Pathology has a vacancy for a Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist. This is a permanent position, 37.5 hours per week. The successful candidate will be hardworking, reliable, flexible and must work well within a team.
Cellular Pathology comprises Histology and Non-gynae cytology, supported by a comprehensive immunohistochemistry service.
We receive around 33,000 histology and 3,000 non-gynae requests per year. The post will be based at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital.
Main duties of the job
1. Work at a specialist level across a range of manual and automated procedures including: Specimen reception, BMS cut up, microtomy, cryotomy, non-gynae cytology, immunocytochemistry.
2. Perform internal and external quality control, monitor results.
3. Handle specimens of relevant categories in BMS cut up.
4. Work independently, planning own workload and troubleshooting when necessary.
5. Train and develop students and other staff.

Whilst this role is currently based here at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, this may not be the case in the future and the service may be relocated to another hospital or an off-site location.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Accredited Degree in Biomedical or Healthcare Science.
* Specialist diploma in Cellular Pathology (or evidence of equivalent knowledge).
* Evidence of recent, relevant CPD.
* MSc biomedical or cellular sciences.
* IBMS HSD in Cellular Pathology.
* IBMS certificate of extended practice.
Experience
* Post-registration experience in an NHS cellular pathology lab.
* Experience of non-gynaecological cytology/immunocytochemistry.
* Experience in dissection beyond specimen transfer.
Knowledge
* Evidence of sound theoretical knowledge.
* LIMS experience.
* Audit training and completion.
* Advanced IT Experience - Tracking, Digital, LIMS, data.
Personal attributes
* Evidence of good teamworking.
* Flexible and can adapt to changing work patterns.
* Organised with good time management skills.
* Involvement with Lean, improvement or other projects.
