East Lancs Hospice
East Lancashire Hospice is a registered charity, founded in 1984. We support and care for patients with a life limiting illness, their families and others close to them. We provide this in a number of ways; at the hospice and in people’s own homes across our community of Blackburn, Darwen, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley.
With approximately 120 employees and over 250 volunteers, our people are our biggest asset whom we value tremendously. Our services to the local community would not be possible without our motivated and caring workforce who always strive to deliver excellence in all that they do. The hospice is a unique and special place, kindness and compassion are qualities that run throughout the hospice and our people truly believe in what we do.
An exciting and new opportunity has arisen as part of the re-structure of our catering team, for a catering assistant working circa 20 hours flexibly over seven days with two or three days off. Due to the nature of the organisation being a charity, the catering department is assisted through many wonderful volunteers and so this catering assistant position will be different than your ‘everyday’ front of house role.
You will be responsible for contributing to a high quality of food and drink preparation and service in the catering department and café retreat and to help support the smooth running of all the catering department services. You must have a friendly professional approach and create a benchmark of customer care expectations to encourage our patients.
Actively upsell specials and effectively communicate upcoming catering events to help the hospice meet their income generation goals. Effective communication is essential to this post and you will remain professional when engaging with our patients and customers. Experience in processing money transactions is preferred but full on the job training can be given. Contribute to a large team of staff and volunteers in a positive and encouraging style to maintain high levels of food and drink preparation and service.
The Successful Candidate
The hospice staff and volunteers are paramount to the success of the hospice and therefore it is extremely important the successful applicant for this front of house post has strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude and approachable nature.
You will hopefully have experience in a similar position but training can be given to the right candidate. You should have a good knowledge of food and drink preparation and service, and be able to demonstrate good customer care to other members of staff, our patients, their families and the general public, so that our reputation is consistent and the hospice is represented correctly. Strong hygiene practices and knowledge of food safety management systems is beneficial, but training can be given. You must ensure a high level of service is maintained whilst adopting our core values in everything you do.
Our core values: to care, listen, respect and work together to support people to live well until they die and support those affected by death.
