Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist
This post is for a consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
The Trust is recruiting to a new post, created as a result of the Trust's response to Ockenden recommendations and the Trust's commitment to women's health.
The post holder will help to change how we deliver women's services at the Trust and builds on the development of women's healthcare that the Trust has undertaken over the last 3-4 years.
Main duties of the job
Maternity Services and Gynaecology Services are based at Ormskirk Hospital. Clinics are conducted at Southport Hospital and May Logan Community Centre. With shaping care together, there is a drive to take services closer to the women and conduct more clinics in the community.
Duties include:
* To participate in the provision of an Obstetric and Gynaecological service to Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals in co-operation with the other Consultants in post.
* Help ensure the department meets its cancer targets.
* To act as a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and to maintain a safe, friendly and efficient service.
* To assist in providing 60 hours dedicated Consultant time on the delivery suite and to participate in alternative models of achieving this.
* To assist in delivering elective Caesarean section lists and termination services (providing you have no moral objection to terminations).
* To share in the administration and management of the Obstetrics & Gynaecology services.
* To share in the direct supervision of junior medical staff, physician associate students, midwifery and nursing staff and medical students taking responsibility for their ongoing education and training.
* To participate in clinical audit, adverse event review, guideline development review, external review and service development.

Job responsibilities
Teaching
There are Clinical Education Centres on each of the hospital sites both of which are well equipped with excellent audio-visual facilities, libraries, including Medline, internet access, slide, overhead projection and computer-based presentation/ preparation facilities. There are seminar/meetings rooms, common rooms with catering facilities. The Southport Centre has recently been extended to include a new Clinical Skills Laboratory, library and additional tutorial rooms.
The Director of Medical Education is based at the Southport Centre and is supported by the Medical Education Manager for both sites and there is a full-time librarian on each site.
There is a full programme of educational activities in the Postgraduate Centre. There is a weekly grand round. There are monthly evening meetings organised by the Postgraduate Centre and outside Societies.
The successful candidate will participate in all teaching commitments shared by the department.
Duties and Responsibilities
* To participate in the provision of an Obstetric and Gynaecological service to Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust in co-operation with the other Consultants in post.
* In addition to any specialist interests all consultants will be involved in providing a general clinical service to the Trust.
* Provision with consultant colleagues of a service to Sefton, West Lancashire & surrounding areas with responsibility for diagnosis & treatment of patients at the hospitals & clinics at which you have duties, this may include clinics in community facilities.
* Responsible for the continuing care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to & training of your staff.
* Provision of an out-of-hours service with consultant colleagues including on-call rota commitments.
* Active participation in undergraduate & post graduate education, including training sessions for Foundation Years, Specialty Registrars, and medical students.
* Provision of cover for your consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave including care of patients & supervision of doctors in training.
* To participate in clinical audit, adverse event review, guideline development review, external review, and service development.
* Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & CPD activity locally & nationally as appropriate.
* Participate in clinical audit under local arrangements.
* Commitment to entering patients into MRC trials where appropriate (if the appointee has an interest in research this would be supported by the Trust & the Division).
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
* Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation of successful application.
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* MRCOG or equivalent medical qualification.
* Clinical supervisor qualification.
Desirable
* MD/PHD or equivalent medical qualification.
* Formal teaching qualification (e.g. PG cert / MEd).
Knowledge & Experience Essential
* ATSM in Advanced Labour Ward Practice.
* Training and experience to independently manage gynaecology emergencies during on-call.
* Evidence of administrative experience.
* Evidence of continuing participation in Clinical governance in maternity and Gynaecology.
* Evidence of continuing supervision of Junior Medical Staff and / or medical students.
* Familiarity with current trainee and medical student curriculum.
Desirable
* ATSM in fetal medicine labour ward lead, high risk pregnancy or Maternal medicine.
* Intermediate US scan training in fetal medicine.
* Formal training / experience in management.
* Evidence of root cause analysis training.
* Formal leadership qualification.
Skills Essential
* Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, and other agencies.
* Supportive and tolerant.
* Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
* Caring attitude to patients, prioritising patient safety.
Desirable
* Evidence of submission of clinical / quality improvement projects for poster / oral presentation at regional or national events.
* Evidence of involvement in research e.g., recruited NIHR trials participants.
