This role supports the ongoing production and in-service operation of products for aerospace, land-based systems, rail, and oil & gas industries. The role requires an experienced mechanical design engineer with an understanding of basic electrical controllers containing components such as relays and discrete electronics. This role is part of the Sustaining Engineering team, which supports the Operations team and external Customers, to ensure continuity of supply of existing products or the repair of in-service products out of production, by addressing issues such as component obsolescence, defining alternatives for long lead time components, or addressing yield issues related to existing designs. This sustaining engineering team is a multi-disciplined team including mechanical and electronic design engineers, with support from project managers where appropriate.
Main Duties/Responsibilities
1. Review, analyse, and validate product related issues arising during the production or in-service operation of products, including fans, heaters, air-conditioning systems, motors, and actuators.
2. Able to define corrective actions, component alternatives or re-design proposals to address production or in-service related issues impacting delivery, yield, or performance of products.
3. Support the production assembly and test teams as required to help resolve design related yield or performance issues, and/or assist in the capture of data or results to help determine corrective actions.
4. Support occasional visits to customers to discuss in-service investigations or other issues relating to delivered products.
5. Support occasional visits to suppliers to assist with product design, yield, or performance issues of supplied sub-assemblies or component parts relating to in-production or in-service products.
6. Able to produce and review engineering documents such as drawings, specifications, reports, procedures, and change notifications to a high standard.
7. Work effectively within multidisciplinary and inter-departmental teams to support the Sustaining Engineering activities.
8. Support the preparation of technical proposals, costings and associated documentation for business development activities associated with updates to legacy/in-service products.
9. Work within company procedures and contribute to their development, the objective being to maximise company efficiency whilst meeting all customer requirements.
Other Responsibilities/Non-essential Functions
1. Undertake training that is identified as a requirement of the role as identified by the role Manager.
2. Undertake all other reasonable requests that are made by the role manager/acting manager or Directors.
3. At times of reduced department staff attendance there will be a need to be flexible and provide support outside of the normal tasks of the job to ensure customer satisfaction.
4. On occasions, you may be required to take on ad hoc duties which includes, but is not limited to training, department associated tasks and brief secondment to other departments.
