Our Heads of Subject support the leadership team and leaders of learning (Teachers) within their subject specialist departments. They play a central role in ensuring all students receive a high quality and engaging education, upholding high standards of teaching and learning, developing colleagues and the wider subject team.
Working Hours
* 37.5 hours per week over 5 days
* As a Head of Subject, you will have a reduced teaching timetable to allow time for your Head of Subject responsibilities
* Live Teaching is from Monday to Friday between 8:30am to 4.40pm
The Head of Subject role represents an exciting opportunity to become part of the leadership team at Academy21 and make a difference to the lives of vulnerable students. As the company expands you will be responsible for supporting your team to deliver excellence within the classroom enabling students to fulfil their potential whilst shaping the future and culture of your department.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will:
* Work in co-operation with, and under the direction of, the Head of School and Executive Head to provide leadership that further improves the school.
* Initiate and manage change and improvement to develop the school, its students, and its staff.
* Provide strategic leadership for the subject area.
* Coordinate with the school leadership team to align work in the subject areas with the school development plan and overall academic approach across the school.
* On a day-to-day basis, manage and lead direct reports and assume additional responsibilities as required to meet the needs of the business delegating tasks as appropriate to Deputy Head of Subject.
* Identify clear and appropriate targets for attainment and/or achievement across the relevant subject area.
* Lead evaluation strategies and contribute to overall school self-evaluation.
* Ensure all staff are familiar with, and continuously uphold the school's identity and values.
* Develop the effectiveness of approaches to teaching and learning and ensure common teaching standards and practice are applied consistently across the subject area ensuring the continued delivery of high-quality teaching and learning.
* Apply up-to-date understanding of effective curriculum and pedagogy to ensure the teaching team is able to deliver and assess learning experiences successfully.
* Work with their team and with fellow subject leaders to continuously improve the student experience and increase engagement with learning.
* Be responsible for the Performance Management of designated staff through effective monitoring and support during induction, probation, and annual appraisals.
* Act as a role model of good practice for other teachers, modelling effective strategies and facilitating team collaboration across and between subject areas.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
* Ideally the candidate will be qualified up to degree level in a related subject area and have a recognised teaching qualification, a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status.
* The candidate should have previous experience of leading teams in the primary, secondary or college sector.
* Knowledge of the correct safeguarding procedures.
* Excellent subject knowledge and the knowledge of best ways to engage students in your subject of expertise.
* Analytical and data orientated skills that support change and improvement.
* Evident interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to form strong relationships both internally and externally.
