If shortlisted for 2nd stage interview candidates must be available for a face to face on site interview at Rolls-Royce Bristol on the 24th of February.
An exciting opportunity has arisen with in Rolls-Royce Bristol as they seek to recruit a Stress Engineer to join their Team. This role will be known internally as a (Mechanical Integrity Engineer).
The Stress engineers ensure the integrity of our products.
They predict the mechanical behaviour of components and sub-systems, supporting the Design function, taking into account various failure mechanisms (e.g. proof, ultimate, fatigue (low & high cycle), creep etc.) and contributing factors (e.g. vibration, thermal induced loads, inherent manufacturing anomalies, corrosion, extreme operating conditions). The role of a Stress Engineer includes being influential at all stages in the design cycle (to ensure designs are robust, meet requirements and are optimised) through to the products service life and to component disposal.
What you will be doing
In this exciting new role you will have a chance to ensure the integrity and the correct mechanical behaviour of our products by:
1. Conducting mechanical design and analysis. This includes selection and generation as well as involvement in further development of numerical models, use of numeral calculation methods, developing of interdisciplinary agreed boundary conditions and implementation into own models as well as into models of other disciplines (e.g. performance), plausibility check of boundary conditions, execution and analysis of numerical model calculations, understanding calculations as well as deriving suggestions for improvements.
2. Conducting mechanical experiments. This includes preparation of experiment specification for tests on test rigs and engines, supervision and support of experiments, plausibility check of results during the execution of the test, analysis and interpretation of test results and comparison with analytical and/or empirical models.
3. To resolve problems through evaluative judgements. Able to analyse factual information from multiple sources, interpret results and identify effective solutions by application of technical knowledge, expertise and engineering judgement.
4. To be responsible for defined technical packages/investigations of work providing delivery against programme milestones within agreed cost, timescale and quality requirements.
5. To be a point of contact within a given engineering discipline and to share subject matter knowledge across the function. This may include providing advisory services to designated customers, influencing your peer group, representing senior departmental staff and acting as advisor/coach on matters where you are technically authoritative.
6. To understand company business and function objectives and ensure that the work you do supports this. To always act in accordance with both the company values and those associated with being a professional engineer.
7. To actively promote, encourage and support the identification and implementation of continuous improvements (e.g. tools, processes and methods) both within and outside their immediate sphere and prompt action across the wider team.
Who we are looking for

To be successful in this role you will need to have:
1. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or regional equivalent qualification, or equivalent experience
2. Strong technical knowledge in mechanical design assessment methodologies (e.g. stress analysis both static and dynamic, fracture and fatigue assessment) with experience of, or a good appreciation of, finite element stressing techniques (ANSYS preferred) and complex testing (of assemblies, component and materials).
3. An understanding of material behaviour, crack propagation, contact, thermo-mechanical fatigue and statistics
4. An understanding of cross-discipline engineering concepts which include but are not limited to manufacturing engineering, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, thermal and mechanical analysis, cost engineering and product definition.
5. Experience of working with novel designs and problems with the ability to work outside established technical processes, developing these as needed throughout your work.
6. An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking on a range of technical problems and make balanced decisions across technical and business parameters
7. An appreciation of the importance of product integrity is considered essential
8. Membership of a relevant professional body attained / working towards Chartered status is preferred
9. The ability to effectively communicate the method and results of complex analyses to peers, senior colleagues and external organisations such as customers or regulatory bodies
