An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head Gardener to assist in the continued development of the charming gardens and grounds on a picturesque, private estate near Handcross, West Sussex. The gardens are being developed by the property owners who are keen gardeners and will be involved in the project.
The main house is set in a garden of 6 acres, being part of the 180 acre estate of meadowland and ancient woodland. Incorporated in this is a wedding venue with an oak barn overlooking a formal walled garden and pergola. There is also a recently constructed folly with plans to develop a new planting scheme around it, together with extensive new landscape gardens.
The Head Gardener will be working collaboratively, alongside the property owners (and a junior gardener), to bring the project to life. This is a fantastic opportunity to put your creative stamp on a truly wonderful estate, including the design, implementation and rejuvenation of planting schemes throughout the gardens.
The Head Gardener should have extensive experience of working on projects in a similar setting, as well as some design capabilities. Excellent plant knowledge is desired with a good understanding of specialist pruning, propagation and kitchen gardening including the production of vegetables and cut flowers. They will be expected to have good knowledge and experience of sustainable gardening methods such as composting, and try to work as organically as possible, with limited use of chemicals. Applicants should be physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weathers.
It is required that the Head Gardener will have a good understanding of the use and maintenance of a variety of machinery including, but not limited to, ride-on mowers, quad bikes and chippers. A driving licence is essential and PA1/6 Spraying, and chainsaw certificates would be advantageous.
This is a full-time salaried position, Monday to Friday, with paid breaks and lunch. There will be occasional requirements for overtime, which can be taken back as time in lieu at times to be agreed. The holiday allowance for the position is 20 days plus bank holidays, which must include Christmas.
