ABOUT THE ROLE
Grade 5 Senior Technician supporting Maker Space (0.5 FTE 1 year fixed term maternity cover).
The Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences requires a Senior Technician to support students, staff, and stakeholders across the Design and Arts Making spaces. The post holder will be required to work across a number of creative areas within the faculty, providing specialist technical support in workshops and studio spaces, with special emphasis on the management of safe working practices in workshops and associated equipment.
You should have comprehensive knowledge of current technical practice relevant to Design and Contemporary Arts including letterpress, book binding and associated processes, and a working knowledge of laser cutting. You will have experience of developing and delivering demonstration activities to support learning outcomes and provide excellent student experiences. Keeping up-to-date with current and forthcoming technical developments in support of learning, teaching, research, and enterprise activity in the faculty is essential to be successful in the role.
ABOUT THE TEAM
As part of a large technical team working directly with individual and groups of students, you will need to have excellent interpersonal skills. The main area of work will be based in the maker space, which has a team of three technicians with an equivalent space in the design building that you will interact with and support at various times.
ABOUT YOU
To be successful in the role you will have:
1. Good working knowledge of current health and safety regulations and procedures.
2. Good working knowledge of equipment, processes, and procedures used in the art and design maker space workshops and studio, including letterpress.
3. Planning and carrying out demonstration sessions supported by documents and handouts.
4. Excellent interpersonal skills.
5. Ability to plan and prioritise own defined work activities, responding to manager's or work unit requirements, in addition to own responsibilities.
6. Experience of working with relevant specialised processes, systems, and procedures.
7. Experience of working independently to mitigate unforeseen problems and circumstances.
8. Qualified to degree level or equivalent professional experience in the specialist area.
9. Numeracy skills and digitally literate with competency in standard ICT software.
