Chief Technology Officer
Reporting to the Business Unit Director as part of the Leadership Team, the Chief Technology Officer is a senior technical leader in the Futures Business Unit and requires a tech-savvy, entrepreneurial mindset to achieve its goals.
Roke's Futures business unit uses our expertise gathered across many industries to provide rapid, innovative, and secure solutions to our customers' most complex challenges. We operate across the whole lifecycle providing advice, research and development, engineering, design, and in-service support for our products and services. We have solutions around Intelligent Sensing, Situational Awareness, and Autonomy. We have a strong reputation for selling innovative solutions and services to Rolls Royce for Aerospace inspection and into FTSE 100 companies in Utilities, Mining, and Telecom sectors.
Role Overview
The Chief Technology Officer is accountable for the Futures technology strategy and its implementation, driving the science and technology activities to deliver IP-led growth. This role will lead technical strategies to strengthen Futures as a business and package capabilities into products/services to increase Roke's market share and build competitive advantage.
This role is responsible for evangelizing the technical strength of Roke's Futures capability to align engineering people, processes, and technology to win new business and deliver leading-edge capability to meet our business plan.
Key Responsibilities
1. Own definition and implementation of the Futures Technology Strategy.
2. Be the focal point of thought leadership, driving horizon scanning, innovation, and ideation into new and existing markets supporting to grow the Roke brand.
3. Drive the ideation to product process for Futures dovetailing requirements, priorities, and development into the wider Roke Innovation system by creating strategies to increase IP-Led revenue and return on investment.
4. Work with the wider business, the Innovation Director, and CTO Forum to enhance existing products, solutions & IP to keep Futures and Roke at the forefront of the technology curve.
5. Take a leading role in shaping Futures value propositions in terms of solution development, technology strategy, and use of partners to win new business.
6. Support business winning alongside Sales Management by speaking at industry events and establishing a Roke presence on relevant advisory boards.
7. Establish a set of technology portfolios which direct the Futures go-to-market approach supported by clear product & capability roadmaps.
8. Own and develop key technology-focused relationships with customers, suppliers, academia, and industry.
9. Manage the effectiveness and efficiency of science, technology, and engineering processes including adoption of new systems or practices, to ensure Futures stays relevant with market conditions and delivers strategic value for its clients.

3. Coach and mentor staff across the business, providing feedback through regular 1:1 meetings and team meetings to discuss goals set in line with company strategy.
As a senior technical subject matter expert, the Chief Technology Officer will collaborate across Roke to ensure that strategic planning, product investment, and use of technology is coordinated in line with the needs of the Futures Business Unit and the wider business.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience requirements:
1. Very strong problem solver, with an innate desire to further the security and prosperity of the UK.
2. Experience in providing thought leadership and influencing customers on how best to achieve their own goals and strategy.
3. Proven experience of developing business and technical strategies, solution development, and delivery.
4. Technically curious, with extensive experience of delivering bespoke technical capability, solutions, and services, in a consulting, engineering, or products/services business.
5. Strong track record in understanding and applying best practice engineering methods, especially in software, and applying them to deliver effective and efficient project and product delivery.
6. Knowledge of secure Cloud design, deployment, migration, and optimization.
7. Knowledge of networking and commodity consumer devices, and their associated architectures and components.
Desirable, but not essential:
1. Knowledge of radio technologies, data science, and Machine Learning.
2. Knowledge of the UK National Security market and experience in partnering with or selling through other entities into major programmes.
