What you will do in your working day
Year one duties will include:
* Assist others in the Finance team with the raising of debtor invoices, organisation of payment invoices, journals, virements and forecasts and other data into the relevant Finance Management System (Agresso) and other systems as appropriate
* Learn to produce financial reports from a range of finance systems following procedures to download and manipulate in Excel
* Learn to liaise with others in the organisation about the various stages of order processing, goods receipting, authorisations and checking in the Accounts Payable process
* Learn to respond to financial queries, including knowing how to query data on our Financial Management System (Agresso) and when to refer to others
* Learn to liaise with others in the organisation regarding financial queries
* Participate in the organisation and prioritisation of workloads in order to meet deadlines, maintain high standards at all times and learn to meet the relevant performance measurement targets
* In association with the team, monitor the team’s e-mail inbox and either deal with any e-mail accordingly or pass it onto another member of staff
* Learn to undertake general office duties and assist colleagues within the department as a whole
* Participate in team meetings
* Participate in probationary reviews and an annual Performance Review, undertaking any personnel development needs identified through this process
YEAR 2 - Level 3 Apprenticeship Duties will include:
Progression to year 2 of the apprenticeship will provide the apprentice with opportunities to develop knowledge and experience in either Financial or Management Accounting. This will involve building on work done in Year 1 in addition to the following tasks / areas of work:
Financial Accounting:
* Tasks associated with reconciliation and control
* Monitoring income receipts, for example capital financing and section 106 deposits
* Contributing to the monitoring of income from grants and aiding the completion of grant claims
* Monitoring different types of expenditure within the accounts.
* Specific placements in various teams - contributing to ad hoc projects - for example the apprentice could work on developing the Council’s Inventories and Asset Management work
Management Accounting:
* Contribute to the preparation of basic budgets for defined service areas or projects, and gradually take on responsibility for small budget areas
* Monitor different types of expenditure, reconcile financial statements and investigate variations
* Produce information and reports for Accountants and others both in the team and supported services, ensuring accuracy of data at all times, and possibly attendance at meetings to present the data
* Produce financial reports for others, using a range of finance systems and procedures, be responsible for downloading and manipulating data and reports, using Advanced Excel tools to do this
* Assist accountants with other regular or ad hoc accounting or administrative tasks
* Participate in the organisation and prioritisation of workloads in order to meet deadlines and maintain high standards at all times
In addition to formal learning provided by Bath College, the Council will provide access to corporate training including customer services skills, coaching, IT and individual one to one supervisory meetings and Personal Development Plans.
The training you will be getting
Level 2 Accounts or finance assistant Apprenticeship, you will acheive a AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting.
Delivery is one day per week, term time only, at our City Centre Campus in Bath.
What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship
Whilst we cannot guarantee a role within the Council’s management accounts finance team, we will help to identify any relevant opportunities within the wider finance service and Council and encourage the apprentice to apply for them.
