Job Summary
An exciting, substantive opportunity has arisen within Postbridge Unit for a Band 3 Health Care Assistant. Postbridge Unit is a dedicated planned surgical admissions Unit & extended daycase & overnight stay recovery Unit for a wide range of surgical procedures. The ward is staffed by an experienced and dedicated team of nurses and health care assistants caring for elective patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures.
Main duties of the job
1. To assist in the delivery of care planned and assessed by the Registered Nurses.
2. To carry out care / other duties under indirect supervision.
3. To supervise junior health care assistants making a contribution to their training and development.
4. To undertake specific extended skills.
5. Support care on a day-to-day basis for all patients in the clinical area under indirect supervision & coordinate the flow of patients coming back from the various surgical recovery Units.
6. Contribute to resource management.

Job Responsibilities
1. You should have attained or be working towards the Level 3 qualification, with recent experience of caring for patients in a clinical setting.
2. You should possess good communication and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to work in a calm and methodical manner.
3. The successful candidate will have recent, up-to-date evidence of development.
4. Providing and delivering a high standard of nursing care by initiating and co-ordinating the assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating of individual patients needs based on evidence.
5. To manage, under indirect supervision, own workloads within clinical area and competencies of the post.
6. Carry out clinical observations on patients, recognising, recording and reporting all changes in patients condition to senior staff.
7. To support maintenance of fluid balance and dietary charts, recognising, recording and reporting all adverse findings to senior staff.
8. To carry out observations of skin integrity over pressure points, recognising and reporting all findings to senior staff.
9. To complete documentation for manual handling charts, to be assessed by registered staff.
10. To recognise the importance of health education and teaching of patients and carers, and to be able to advise and refer patients on where to access information.
11. Document and sign for all observations and care given with counter signature from a registered practitioner.
12. To maintain own professional development, attending courses/further training to enhance and optimise role within the work area.
13. To participate in the training and development of junior staff on the ward and participate in the supervision and support of trainee Health Care Assistants.
14. Act as a mentor to new health Care Assistants & HCA Trainees, participating in induction programs and ongoing development of their practice.
15. To promote and safeguard the wellbeing of patients, their families and colleagues.
16. To participate in the development and implementation of ward area policy and nursing strategies.
17. To supervise and share responsibility in the care and maintenance of all equipment on the ward and stock control.
18. To respect confidential information, in line with the Trust policy Data Protection Act, obtained in the course of work and not disclose this information.
19. To be familiar with and adhere to Trust and Departmental policies and procedures mindful of responsibilities to self, colleagues and patients.
20. Report untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies to senior staff.
21. Following patient assessment by Registered Staff, undertake extended skills specific to individual competence under the indirect supervision of Registered staff.
Person Specification
Knowledge & Experience Essential
* Experience of providing care in a healthcare or social setting.
* Be able to work as a member of a team.
* Experience of time management and prioritising work.
* Understands and committed to a caring approach to patients & relatives.
Qualifications Essential
* One of the following Level 3 (SCQF - 6): - City and Guilds 3, NVQ 3, BTEC National Diploma, Experience equivalent to the above qualifications.
* Level 2 Functional skills in English and Math's, or equivalent.
* Completion of Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support (that maps to the Apprenticeship Standard for Senior Health Care Support Worker).
* Equivalent demonstrable experience.
Aptitude & Abilities Essential
* Effective and appropriate communication skills both written and verbal.
* Able to complete appropriate documentation accurately.
* Demonstrate an awareness of healthcare work and policies and procedures.
* Committed to providing high quality patient care.
* Ability to work with minimum supervision to a high standard.
* IT skills, basic word, Email, keyboard skills.
* Ability and willingness to undertake appropriate training within given time frames.
