The Role
The School Nurse and Pupil Welfare Lead is responsible for providing a caring and efficient first aid and medical service for all pupils and occasional assistance at our Sports Grounds. This role will be involved in ensuring we have up to date information and medication for any medical or health needs the pupils might have, including but not limited to; asthma and allergies. The appointed candidate will liaise with parents to ensure care plans are accurate and up to date and timely correspondence is sent regarding health matters. In addition, the Pupil Welfare Lead will be an integral part of promoting wellbeing for the pupils and staff and working alongside the Senior Leadership Team, ELSAs, School Counsellor, Heads of Year and SENCOs to promote wellbeing support and initiatives across the school.
First Aid will also be offered to staff and visitors where appropriate with regular training provided for staff and pupils.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical
1. Assess and prioritise first aid and medical issues presented by pupils, staff or visitors to the school; treat in line with accepted good practice and according to protocol where necessary.
2. Ensure that all documentation regarding any accident or incident on school premises, including the details of any first aid treatment given is recorded in an accurate and contemporaneous manner using the EVOLVE system and follow up as appropriate.
3. Ensure that any medication given to pupils in school is stored, administered and documented according to the school’s First Aid, Medicines and Medical Conditions Management policy.
4. Monitor the expiration dates of any medicine supplied to the school by a parent, and request replacement when necessary and within a suitable time frame.
5. Implement adequate infection control measures throughout the school and promote the importance of good hygiene practices amongst pupils and staff.
6. Monitor on a regular basis all first aid supplies and emergency equipment across departments, restocking and replenishing items when necessary.
7. Prepare medical bags for school trips, games afternoons and sporting fixtures, ensuring that any medication held in school for pupils is taken by the member of staff in charge should it be required in the event of an emergency.
8. Provide first aid support for sporting events held at the school playing fields when requested.
9. Be available to provide first aid cover for school-run holiday clubs when requested.
10. Assist with the delivery of PSHE education to pupils in school if requested; provide training to staff in the management of common issues such as allergies and asthma or any other medical condition deemed necessary for staff to have an awareness of.
11. Arrange for pupils in the relevant age groups to be offered audiology screening and influenza vaccinations on an annual basis, in accordance with national guidelines and in conjunction with appropriate external agencies.
12. Inform the Estates and Facilities Manager and Senior Leadership Team in the event of more serious accidents or incidents involving pupils, staff members or visitors which occur on school premises so that appropriate action may be taken as necessary.
13. Inform parents in a timely manner of any accident or illness involving a pupil which causes concern.
14. Maintain accurate medical information pertaining to pupils on file; enter any relevant medical details regarding new pupils to any department; update information for existing pupils as necessary on receipt of the completed Medical Information Sheet sent out to parents annually.
15. Inform the Catering Manager of pupils with food allergies and specific dietary requirements on a termly basis and also upon receipt of any new information.
16. Inform teaching staff of relevant medical history regarding pupils in their charge at any time, and provide advice or information as appropriate.
17. Liaise with members of the pastoral team in relation to any concerns regarding the health or wellbeing of any pupil, consulting the pupil’s parent where appropriate.
18. Participate in termly Health and Safety meetings, advising and reporting on any matters or issues of concern within school.
19. Prepare general medical guidance notes for distribution to the wider ECS community.
Professional
1. Maintain a working knowledge of statutory guidance and legislation pertaining to Safeguarding children in education.
2. Provide support and assistance in the handling of any Safeguarding issues which may arise.
3. Demonstrate commitment to continuing professional development by undertaking suitable training and self-directed learning as appropriate.
4. Contribute to the development, implementation and review of policies relevant to the health and welfare of pupils and have an awareness of current developments in public health services and legislation.
5. Maintain confidentiality of information acquired in the course of undertaking duties for the school at all times.
6. Attend staff INSET days as required.
7. Establish legislation that should be followed and regularly checked for relevance and updates.
8. Review the policies and procedures re medical matters used across the School.
9. Audit the data held on pupils and staff and how and when it should be updated.
10. Update the forms requesting information from parents.
11. Check the right information is being shared with the right staff in the most effective manner.
12. Recruit a network/bank of first aiders to support fixtures etc.
13. Set out the First Aid procedures to be used in School as guidelines for staff administering First Aid.
14. Review the training of staff (in First Aid, specific medical needs, etc.) and set up/recommend a programme of training.
15. Work with the H&S consultant and Bursar regarding incident reporting and follow up.
Specific Responsibilities
Health & First Aid:
1. Provide emergency first aid to pupils and staff and complete appropriate documentation, along with the Reception Administrators and other Senior Administrators.
2. Provide care to sick pupils and contact parents if necessary, along with the Reception Administrators.
3. Ensure appropriate care is accessible to pupils and sufficient suitably qualified staff are always available. Supervise relevant documentation where necessary.
4. Undertake regular first aid training at an appropriate level (e.g., First Aid at Work).
5. Ensure accurate pupils’ health records are kept and communicated along with the Reception Administrators.
6. Order first aid supplies for all school sites and departments, including maintenance of defibrillators.
7. Organise immunisation programmes for all School sites, liaising with the Prep School as appropriate.
8. Record first aid qualifications and book appropriate requalification courses for all staff.
9. Arrange first aid and medical information INSETs.
10. Book professional first aid cover for events and fixtures, when necessary, with the assistance of the Reception Administrators.
11. Ensure relevant compliance documentation regarding First Aid, health and safety, and safeguarding is up to date with support from the Senior Administrator - Operations, the Bursar and Deputy Head of Senior School – Pupil Development & Wellbeing.
General/Other
1. Adhere at all times to Safeguarding and Child Protection regulations, and training.
