Job summary
The post holder will practice autonomously within the designated specialty area to provide patient-centered care. The Advanced Clinical Neurophysiologist will be required to independently carry out highly specialist clinical neurophysiology investigations within an agreed scope of practice, centered around peripheral neurophysiology; electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS).
They will work in partnership with other health and social care professionals, students and trainees, agencies, service users and their carers and families. The post holder will lead the ongoing development of clinical practice and standards of care for their area within the service, including the development of policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues working in accordance with trust policies, procedures and guidelines and will be responsible for completing any work-based training associated with the role.
1. Interpret EMG and NCS results and recognize if further testing is required to reach a diagnosis or if further investigations for patients presenting to neurophysiology with highly complex pathologies.
2. Undertake advanced interpretation of results or expansion of test criteria.
3. Able to use highly complex equipment.
4. Undertake nerve conduction tests on wards and ITU with autonomous decision making and providing feedback to referrers without a consultant present.
5. Contribute to investigations into any complaints regarding the service and report findings to department manager in accordance with local procedure.
6. Provide independent high-quality clinical reports for peripheral neurophysiology performed.
7. Conditions or symptoms in the Advanced Clinical Neurophysiologist scope of practice includes but is not limited to:
1. Ulnar nerve entrapment at the wrist
2. Asymmetric lower limb sensory impairment
3. Radiculopathy, cervical or lumbar
Act as a main communication point for physiologist enquiries, to include being able to offer specialist advice on highly complex investigation and protocols that involve both NHS staff, facilities and/or resources. Accepting and initially responding to both sensitive and often highly complex information.

Person specification
Qualifications
1. Professional Healthcare Registration with a UK Regulatory Body (AHCS).
2. Master's level Qualification in specific specialty.
3. Post Graduate Qualification in specific specialty i.e MSc Advanced Clinical Practitioner (Neurophysiology), MSc Clinical Physiology.
4. BSc Hons Clinical Physiology.
5. Association of Neurophysiologist Scientist Membership (ANS)
6. Recognized Teaching & Assessing/Mentoring Qualification/Course or equivalent demonstrable experience.
Experience
1. A knowledgeable clinician with the ability to ensure clinical governance is embedded in practice.
2. Significant post-registration experience at a senior level in neurophysiology, having carried out a full range of highly complex investigations in all modalities in neurophysiology.
3. Ability to perform EMG/NCS studies independently.
4. Expert knowledge of a full range of procedures specific to peripheral neurophysiology.
5. A sound knowledge of professional priorities and issues relating to NHS care provision Evidence of line management experience.
6. Knowledge of the national and local NHS healthcare agenda and its impact implications Service Development experience.
7. Knowledge & evidence of research/audit processes and application Working with a wide range of IT systems.
8. Working with a range of specialist neurophysiology equipment.
9. Evidence/experience of working in an MDT within a health care provider service.
10. Experience of working on own and in a team in a health care environment delegating to others within a team/providing supervision to others.
11. Awareness of current relevant NHS policies.
12. Understanding/experience of the principles of safeguarding and mental capacity.
13. Awareness of health and safety issues.
