Position Title: Teacher (Maths and English)
Location: Sporting Chance Group - Alternative Provision

Purpose of the Role
We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated teacher to deliver high-quality Maths and English lessons at our alternative provision centre. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in providing a tailored education for students who may have faced barriers to learning in traditional school environments. You will inspire, support, and motivate learners, helping them achieve academic success while fostering personal growth and resilience.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
1. Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons in Maths and English tailored to meet the needs of learners with diverse abilities and learning styles.
2. Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment where all learners feel valued and motivated.
3. Use a range of teaching strategies and resources to ensure high levels of engagement and understanding.
4. Assess, monitor, and track learner progress regularly, providing constructive feedback to help students meet their potential.
5. Adapt teaching plans and strategies to address individual Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) targets, as applicable.
Student Support
1. Build strong, positive relationships with students to help them re-engage with education.
2. Work collaboratively with colleagues, families, and external professionals to address any barriers to learning and ensure students’ needs are met holistically.
3. Provide pastoral support to students, helping them develop confidence, self-esteem, and resilience.
4. Support students in developing core life skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and teamwork.
5. Support students and partnering schools with safeguarding concerns.
Behaviour Management
1. Promote positive behaviour by setting clear expectations, offering consistent rewards, and using restorative practices when addressing challenges.
2. Maintain a safe and orderly learning environment, responding calmly and effectively to disruptive behaviour when it arises.
3. Contribute to the development of the Maths and English curriculum, ensuring it is accessible, relevant, and engaging for learners.
4. Integrate practical, real-life applications of Maths and English into lessons to make learning meaningful and relatable.
5. Incorporate literacy and numeracy across the wider curriculum to strengthen core skills.
Assessment and Reporting
1. Complete regular assessments in line with centre policy, including baseline assessments, formative feedback, and summative evaluations.
2. Prepare and submit progress reports for individual students, detailing academic progress, engagement levels, and any areas for improvement.
3. Participate in meetings with parents, guardians, and commissioning schools to discuss student progress and next steps.
Professional Development and Collaboration
1. Attend and contribute to staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
2. Share best practices with colleagues and collaborate on cross-curricular initiatives and interventions.
3. Keep up to date with developments in education, particularly in the teaching of Maths and English within alternative provisions.
Additional Responsibilities
1. Lead or support enrichment activities, such as sports, creative arts, or vocational skills sessions, to enhance students’ personal development.
2. Act as a mentor to students, providing guidance and support on their academic and personal journeys.
3. Ensure all safeguarding policies and procedures are followed, reporting any concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
4. Carry out other duties as required to support the smooth operation of the centre.
Minimum Requirements
1. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification.
2. Proven experience teaching Maths and/or English to learners aged 11–16, including those with SEND or SEMH needs.
3. Strong understanding of differentiated teaching strategies to engage learners with varying abilities.
4. Excellent classroom management skills and the ability to promote positive behaviour.
5. Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
Desired Requirements
1. Experience working within an alternative provision, pupil referral unit (PRU), or similar educational setting.
2. Understanding of SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs and experience implementing strategies to support learners.
3. Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and restorative approaches to behaviour management.
4. Familiarity with delivering functional skills qualifications or GCSEs in Maths and English.
5. Additional training or qualifications in SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), mental health, or safeguarding.
6. Ability to integrate practical, hands-on activities into lessons to engage reluctant learners.
7. Experience using educational technology and resources to support teaching and learning.
8. Skills or experience in leading extracurricular activities, such as sports, creative arts, or vocational workshops.
9. Excellent administrative and organisational skills to manage lesson planning, assessment, and reporting effectively.
10. A proactive approach to professional development, with a commitment to staying up to date with developments in education and pedagogy.
11. Full driving license preferred not mandatory/essential.
