Job overview
To assist with the provision of Cardio-Respiratory services throughout the Trust and partnership agencies and to ensure the delivery of a high standard of service for both routine and emergency work.
The post holder will have a broad range of skills across the entire service but provide highly specialised supervision within the Echocardiography service.
Service lead physiologists will be expected to continually consolidate and expand their skills by formal and informal means, constantly updating their knowledge in line with local and national policy.
A commitment to participation in the relevant societies and local and national groups and committees is essential.
Main duties of the job
* Provides fully comprehensive, unsupervised reports of a highly professional standard in a range of procedures.
* Uses clinical judgements to act on reports in an unsupervised way.
* Has highly specialised knowledge and skill in at least one specialist area and is responsible for the development and delivery of that service.
* Clinical supervision of testing in this area.
* Developing and implementing relevant policies and procedures.
* Producing costs for each procedure.
* Implementing staff training programs for all levels of staff.
* Peer evaluation of competency levels.
* Stock control and consumable costs in this area.
* Maintain optimal functioning and regular servicing of equipment.
* Initiation of research and audit programs in order to review services and to monitor capacity.
* Provide regular updates to manager on service progress and re-design.
* A commitment to setting up new services and expanding the Physiologist role into areas traditionally covered by doctors.
* Deputise for other service leads in their absence.
* Participate in out of hours sessions when required.
* May be called upon to participate in a 24hr on call emergency rota covering a range of invasive and non-invasive tests.
* During out of hours or on call sessions, together with clinical responsibilities, the Physiologist will take on a level of managerial control of departmental issues.
* Take on a level of managerial control as designated by the manager.
* Assist department echocardiography lead as necessary.
Person specification
Education/ Qualifications
* Degree in Cardiac Clinical Physiology or equivalent. RCCP registration. ILS. BSE
* ALS Managerial qualification Broad range of accredited short courses IT qualification Educational/Mentorship qualification.
Experience
* Relevant echocardiography experience. Experience in a broad range of cardiac and respiratory test. Educational/Mentorship experience.
* Managerial Experience
Skills/Ability/Knowledge
* Highly specialist knowledge of a broad range of cardiac and respiratory tests.
* Ability to take clinical lead in specialist area and deputise as lead in other areas. Supervision of specialist staff.
* Ability to work in a pressurised environment, using highly technical equipment in a safe manner producing complex, unsupervised reports and advising other clinicians in line with these.
* Ability to interact with patients and provide high quality care, imparting information, instruction and results in a sensitive manner.
* Ability to set up and implement training programs within lead areas, ensuring high quality training of junior staff and implementing reviews to ensure standards are upheld by peers. Providing training to staff of all levels in a wide range of techniques. Essential mentorship skills also required.

* Ability to produce and implement policies and guidelines in own area in line with national and local guidelines. Ability to manage stock control and purchasing issues, advising management on costing and supply chains.
* Excellent organisational skills, ability to communicate on all levels, caring and sensitive manner. Ability to work under pressure. IT literate. Good teaching and presentation skills. Able to take the lead in promoting good practice.
* Willingness to continually update skills and knowledge through certified courses and self-study.
* Willingness to participate in ongoing research projects as well as ability to initiate new studies and present results in appropriate ways.
