Purpose of Position: ESA - Facilitates patient flow and customer satisfaction as the front-line support staff of the Emergency Department ambulatory entrance. PCT - As a member of the patient care team; performs a variety of technical and other directed care functions with the patient and family as delegated by the Registered Nurse. The Patient Care Tech (PCT) is competent to provide care to patients as further described, ranging from adolescents to geriatrics.
Description
ESA (Grade 5A, Job Code: 00289)
1. Practices according to entity mandatory requirements.
2. Practices according to department expectations.
3. Practices with a Customer Service approach to all activities.
4. Provides care for patients according to facility/agency, JCAHO and the law.
5. Provides care as part of the interdisciplinary team.
6. Documents according to facility/agency and department policies.
7. Prioritizes duties according to patient and department needs.
8. Meets the needs of the patient/family using internal and external resources.
9. Uses appropriate physical resources/equipment in a safe manner.
10. Maintains appropriate licenses, certifications, registrations required to perform duties of their designated role/position.
11. Addresses age-specific needs of infants, toddlers, school age, adolescents, adults, older adults.
12. Performs role in a responsible manner taking into account customer service initiatives.
13. Provides care for patients according to facility, JCAHO and the law.
14. Performs specialized procedures as required by specific unit.
15. Uses sterile techniques as necessary.
16. Performs other duties as requested.
PCT (Grade 7)
1. Must be courteous to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
2. Participates in patient care and other unit activities under the direct supervision and guidance of the professional Registered Nurse.
3. Assists patients with activities of daily living as delegated by RN.
4. Performs direct care activities, including/assisting with bed baths, bed & stretcher making (occupied/unoccupied for patient flow and efficient turnaround time).
5. Orients patients to their exam room, including clothing list, television, and call lights.
6. Obtains accurate vital signs, height & weight, pulse oximetry, and documents in Emergency Department Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
7. Performs Unit specific patient care as directed by RN.
8. Intake & output (I&O excluding IV therapy).
9. Post-Mortem Care; i.e; washes and dresses bodies of deceased persons.
10. 12 Lead EKG’s.
11. Set up Holter monitoring for patients based on physician order, if needed.
12. Participates in/performs patient rounding (based on acuity) on patients.
13. Provides direct observation (sitter/1:1) as necessary based on department need.
14. Collects samples, such as urine, blood, and sputum, from patients for testing and performs routine laboratory tests on samples.
15. Performs Glucoscans when required.
16. May be required to retrieve blood products from the Blood Bank.
17. Cleans equipment and supplies as needed during/after patient care process.
18. Inventories assigned rooms and/or requisitions supplies as part of daily assignment.
19. Performs dressing care, and wound care by assisting in the process of a normal saline irrigation of minor wounds (lacerations and/or abrasions).
20. Demonstrates through clinical practice the use of universal precautions, understands the OSHA Blood-borne Pathogens Standards.
21. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge and/or practice in the prevention of TB transmission and adheres to all other infection control policies.
22. Must wear facility provided identification badge at all times.
23. Applies inline immobilization device (collars, back board), ordered soft splints, Does appropriate crutch-training.
24. Equipment Inventory, Stocking of Equipment and Linen.
25. Appropriately stocks patient rooms, IV carts, linen carts, and specialty carts.
26. Checks all Patient Care Equipment.
27. In collaboration with clinical team performs room turnovers, in preparation for patient use.
28. Other duties assigned within PCT scope and practice of care.
Qualifications
ESA (Grade 5A)
* Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
* Possess a High school Diploma or equivalent (GED).
* Must meet at least one of the following qualifications:
* a. Completed a Nursing Assistant Program or equivalent.
* b. Completed an EMT Program.
* c. Completed an LPN Program.
* d. Completed at least one year of Nursing School Program which includes two semesters of clinical practice.
* e. Military corps person.
* Possess a Current Basic Life Support Certification.
* Successfully pass the Falmouth Hospital written competency exam for Nursing Assistant.
* Obtain CPI Certification within 4 months from hire and must maintain recertification bi-annually.
PCT (Grade 7, Job Code: 00332)
* High School diploma or equivalent.
* Minimum six (6) months experience in a health care setting.
* Phlebotomy.
* Must have taken the EKG course.
* Completion of an approved de-escalation Certification Course within 90 days from hire (course offered within).
* Must have ability to read, write, understand English.
* Current CNA license, or EMT-P, or recent military medic or Nursing Student (1 year of clinical rotation required and maintaining of 3.0 GPA).
* Healthcare Professional Basic Life Support BLS.
