The congenital cardiac surgery department works closely with the departments of paediatric cardiology and adult congenital cardiology, forming the Congenital Cardiac Unit. The Unit is the level 1 Centre for the Yorkshire and Humber Congenital Cardiac Network and serves a population of approximately 5.5 million in Yorkshire, Humberside and Northern Trent. Services include all aspects of specialist tertiary care of congenital cardiac patients (children and adults) with the exception of transplantation and long-term mechanical cardiac assistance. The annual workload of the Unit includes over 400 cardiac operations (children and adults), approximately 700 catheterisations per year, and over 10,000 outpatient consultations. A full range of children's services and many adult services are co-located on the Leeds General Infirmary site.

Main Duties of the Job
The team is highly motivated and committed to delivering excellent services for patients, and the expectations of all members of the multi-disciplinary team are high. The department has a proven track record of supporting the professional development of their colleagues, including dual surgeon operating and a pre-procedure planning using the 3D cardiac modelling service. An interest in surgical training is desirable. The Leeds General Infirmary is co-located with the University of Leeds campus offering opportunities for further development of research interests.
The successful applicants should possess FRCS or appropriate higher surgical qualification, (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
Applicants should have established skills in congenital cardiac surgery and its related specialties including complex neonatal and adult congenital cardiac surgical procedures. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable. Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part-time and those wishing to job share.

Job Responsibilities
In relation to this post, we are looking for a Congenital Cardiac Surgeon in the department of Congenital Cardiac Surgery at the Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust. This is a replacement full-time position for a cardiac surgeon who already has considerable experience as an independent operator at consultant level for a wide range of paediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgical procedures, including complex neonatal repairs. Team working is highly valued in the department and there is a proven track record of supporting the development of colleague surgeons, including dual surgeon operating and 3D cardiac modelling service.
The department works closely with the departments of paediatric cardiology and adult congenital cardiology, forming the Congenital Cardiac Unit. The Unit is the level 1 Centre for the Yorkshire and Humber Congenital Cardiac Network and serves a population of approximately 5.5 million in Yorkshire, Humberside and Northern Trent. Services include all aspects of specialist tertiary care of congenital cardiac patients (children and adults) with the exception of transplantation and long-term mechanical cardiac assist. The Congenital Cardiac Unit is situated at the Leeds General Infirmary, with paediatric services housed at the Leeds Children's Hospital in the Clarendon Wing and adult services in the Jubilee Wing. This includes a dedicated 16 bed paediatric cardiac ward, of which 6 beds are designated as high dependency, and a mixed paediatric intensive care unit with 16 beds. There is a 28 bedded adult cardiac surgery ward and dedicated 14 bedded cardiac intensive care which are shared with adult acquired cardiac surgery. There are obstetric, neonatal and all paediatric services on site, as well as many adult services. The Campus of the University of Leeds is located next to the General Infirmary and offers ample opportunities for research, teaching, and innovation.
The advertised position is a replacement post to accommodate recent changes in the department and help build on a team of continued excellence for the future. The cardiac surgeons work closely with the 13 congenital paediatric cardiologists and 5 adult congenital cardiologists.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
* CCT in congenital cardiac surgery or an appropriate higher surgical qualification demonstrating completion of sub-specialty training equivalent to the standards of the UK sub-speciality curriculum in congenital cardiac surgery or equivalent qualification.
* Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
* YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE CLEARLY STATED IN YOUR APPLICATION FORM TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE ROLE.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
