The Medical Equipment Library (MEL) has a requirement for two part-time technicians working three days a week, Monday to Friday, with some requirement for Saturday working, with time off in lieu to cover. The MEL is a central store for frequently used medical Equipment. MEL technicians issue equipment to departments as required and collect equipment once finished with. Before being returned to the library, all equipment is cleaned and checked by the MEL technicians.
MEL technicians also reprocess the Trust's ventilators after patient use, removing the old “dirty patient circuit,” retaining and cleaning the reusable components of the circuit, before fitting a new circuit. MEL technicians reprocess between three and four thousand ventilators a year.
All loans are recorded by the MEL team on the department's computer system.
