It also includes designing innovative equipment and giving specialist advice. They will also participate in the team which maintains the IT networks between the treatment facilities. This work is essential for the effective treatment of cancer patients. Medical Physics provides all the background scientific and technical data, advice and expertise to the radiotherapy and physics departments for the treatment machines, computer systems and specialized devices. This is fundamental for patient doses to be prescribed and given correctly, safe operation of equipment and staff protection from X-Rays. It includes specifications for the equipment, calibration and QA, repair & maintenance, data networking and computer control, and individualized patient dose computations. Its expert sections include mechanical engineering, machine maintenance & repair, brachytherapy, computing & electronics, treatment planning, dosimetry, training & teaching, and R&D. It also provides a full Radiation Protection service to all X-Ray users in SE Wales. Assist with the commissioning of treatment machines as required.
