Department This research technician post is based in the Biology Department within the internationally recognized York Biomedical Research Institut e. The Hamilton lab studies neuroinflammatory diseases called leukodystrophies using a variety of models. The post holder will contribute to the general organisation of the lab, support the team and contribute to advance our research by analysing the contribution of the immune system to the pathology of leukodystrophy. This is a multi-disciplinary project: this post is at the border of neuroscience and immunology, focusing primarily on the brain immune cells, the microglia. The post holder will also be developing zebrafish models alongside iPSC models, using already established imaging assays in the transparent zebrafish. This is a unique opportunity to develop your research skills in an exciting and clinically relevant environment. Applicants must have experience in laboratory work, and due to the short-term contract, preference will be given to candidates with experience in zebrafish in vivo work and/or iPSCs. This project is funded for 2 years by a research grant to Dr Noémie Hamilton by the Academy of Medical Sciences. Role To provide technical support to research projects in the laboratory. Research, collect and manage data collected in the laboratory for future use in publications and grant applications. Maintain accurate records of work undertaken, including reports, using appropriate (bespoke) software. Liaise with appropriate staff and external service providers to ensure the work area and equipment are kept operational. Skills, Experience & Qualification needed HNC, HND, Degree or equivalent in Biomedical sciences or appropriate experience Relevant theoretical knowledge in neuroscience or immunology. In depth knowledge of relevant safety regulations and procedures for example, COSHH and risk assessment. Knowledge and ability to organise laboratory space using inventories and implement practical measures to keep the work area organised and clean for a large team. Evidence of having contributed to activities using a variety of sometimes specialist technical skills and equipment. Experience of Molecular Biology (e.g. PCR, Cloning, quantitative PCR); Experience in iPSC culture or in vivo zebrafish models is not assumed and can be provided but will be advantageous. You will have a collaborative spirit, keen attention to detail, be able to keep accurate lab and experimental records and able to contribute to a lively, friendly and supportive team atmosphere.
