Job Summary
The post holders will mainly look after inpatients with Gastroenterological disorders admitted to St Thomas hospital, under the supervision of Gastroenterology consultants and specialist trainees. The majority of these patients are admitted to the Gastroenterology ward, with some outliers in other medical and surgical wards. The FY doctors work on a 7-day rota 1:5, covering weekdays and weekends from 8.30 am to 9 pm. There are no night shifts and there is no general medical on call.
Main Duties of the Job
The post holders will be part of the team looking after inpatients with Gastroenterological disorders admitted to St Thomas hospital. They will also support the gastroenterology day unit (GDU), delivering paracentesis to patients with liver disease and other specialist treatments for IBD as well as follow-up reviews. To this aim, they will have the opportunity to learn the basics of abdominal ultrasound.
In addition, the post holders will collaborate with one or more specialist services, including inflammatory bowel disease, artificial nutrition, or hepatobiliary services, attend specialist clinics and multidisciplinary meetings, observe endoscopy procedures, and contribute to the team research and audit portfolio. They will participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care, and also participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

Qualifications and Training: Essential
* Full GMC Registration with licence to practice MBBS or equivalent MRCP part 1.
Desirable
* Other relevant postgraduate qualifications.
Clinical Experience: Essential
* Hospital-based experience in Acute and General Medicine; clinical experience in basic gastroenterology.
Desirable
* At least 6 months of postgraduate experience in Gastroenterology.
Knowledge and Skills: Essential
* Ability to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team; excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, clinical and non-clinical patients, and their carers/relatives.
Research: Essential
* Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research.
Desirable
* Research degree; evidence of the ability to carry out and complete clinical research.
Teaching: Essential
* Experience of supervising medical students; informal teaching.
Desirable
* Certificate of medical education.
Other: Essential
* Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council; evidence of contribution to effective clinical audit and clinical risk management.

* Experience in clinical guideline development.
