A quick look at the role.
The Operations Manager role will report into the Depot Manager and will efficiently and effectively manage the day-to-day operations of the Depot, whilst delivering and maintaining first class customer service against pre-defined business KPIs. This role will work alongside the Transport Manager role to support the depots operational, safety and service performance.
The Operations Manager will oversee the traffic office and they will support in ensuring that the depot deliver first class customer service in line with business KPI’s, Health and Safety compliance, Environmental compliance, O Licence compliance and financial control.
The role also plays a fundamental role in ensuring the depot is promoting employee engagement, continuous improvement identification and management in productivity and quality and operational changes to support/improve business growth and best in class performance.
Your core responsibilities
· Leadership & Performance – Lead the traffic dispatcher team, set clear work instructions, and monitor performance against Service, Safety, and Profitability KPIs.
· Operational Management – Oversee daily shift operations, including driver supervision and vehicle availability, working closely with fleet management.
· Team Development – Train, motivate, and develop staff while managing underperformance and disciplinary procedures.
· Resource & Absence Management – Optimize resources for peak periods (e.g., Bank Holidays, Christmas) and handle absence management, including return-to-work interviews.
· Customer Service & Routing – Ensure efficient routing, resolve service issues, and enhance the customer experience, including occasional customer visits.
· Cost & Efficiency Control – Drive cost reduction, operational efficiency, and budget target achievement.
· Health & Safety Compliance – Enforce safety standards, training, incident reporting, and emergency procedures.
· Deputy & Stakeholder Relations – Maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders and deputize for the Depot Manager as needed.
Our essential requirements
· Operations Management Experience – Proven leadership in services or logistics (Operations Manager level or similar).
· Qualifications – IOSH Certificate & CPC (desirable).
· People & Safety Management – Strong experience in unionised, multi-shift, and labour-intensive environments.
· Performance & Cost Control – Track record of meeting KPIs, cost management, and driving continuous improvement.
· Route Planning Expertise
· Commercial & Time-Critical Operations – Ability to thrive in fast-paced, results-driven environments.
· Industry & Regulatory Knowledge – Deep understanding of waste industry laws, transport logistics, and environmental/health & safety legislation.
