Element Materials Technologies is looking to recruit a Senior Engineer with an interest in metallic materials and fracture mechanics in Hydrogen environments. You will have a few years or more of experience after graduating, ideally with a Mechanical Engineering or Material Science background. This role requires the successful candidate to be responsible for managing large programs of work, setting up and carrying out lab work on multiple metallic and non-metallic materials testing projects within the Hydrogen Testing area of the business. Projects will involve research of how metallic and non-metallic materials respond when exposed to Hydrogen gas, measured by characterisation of materials before and after exposure and during exposure. This is a hands-on role which involves laboratory testing of both large components and small coupon type samples, contact with customers and other laboratories within Element as well as managing of projects including writing of technical reports. Project management Setting up/ running universal test machines to perform mechanical tests on engineering materials to a range of standards (eg. ASTM, ISO) Setup of gaseous/liquid environments at pressure and temperature for in-situ fracture toughness and fatigue testing Processing and analysis of raw test data Writing of technical reports, adding value for clients Writing/contributing to technical proposals for prospective clients Providing technical and engineering leadership, and supporting the development of new technologies Training and mentoring of other members of the team Be accountable for accurate and timely release of testing data to customers including sign-offs of quality control data as acceptable Interaction with customers on project and technical issues and questions Ensuring safe working practices are adhered to by team members at all times Planning and scheduling of testing activities Booking of work into the management information based computer system Receiving and responding to testing related enquiries Performing duties in accordance with Element internal procedures, quality and health and safety requirements Ability to plan, organise and manage work within the defined area of responsibility Ability to review performance, identify problems and contribute to their solution Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills A detailed understanding of fracture toughness testing and analysis processes and procedures Previous experience with gas pressurisation or gas works would be advantageous but not essential Financial and commercial acumen Possess a high level of expertise related to scope, core theories, concepts, terminologies and boundaries Extensive and demonstrable experience with project management for commercial and technical applications Possess a minimum of BSc / BEng degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering, or other related science Have a minimum of 5 years’ pertinent post degree engineering experience, or advanced academic/professional qualifications with some hands-on experience In-depth understanding of testing concepts, including ASTM / ISO standards Extensive experience performing fracture toughness, fatigue, and general mechanical testing on metallic materials LI-JC1 Element is one of the fastest growing testing, inspection and certification businesses in the world.
