The Inclusion Support Advisory Service is recruiting 0.8 FTE specialist Teacher of the Deaf from 1st January 2025 to be based in Derbyshire.
The Teacher of the Deaf team are specialist teachers who work with deaf children from 0-18 years in addition to working collaboratively with nurseries, schools, parents and healthcare professionals to enable the inclusion of deaf children and young people into their mainstream setting.
The team are well established and highly professional in their approach. The successful candidate will be expected to have the mandatory Teacher of the Deaf qualification or be prepared to study for that qualification whilst working for the team.
Key responsibilities include:
* To promote an inclusive approach to education across Derbyshire, supporting deaf children and young people aged 0-18 within the area of need in family settings, private and maintained nursery settings, mainstream settings and special schools, in accordance with the SEND Code of Practice and the Derbyshire Graduated Response.
* Giving specialist advice and support to families and educational settings/schools to ensure high quality outcomes and inclusion for all.
* Advise on audiological equipment and other specialist equipment to support deaf children and young.
* Interpret audiograms and explain them to key adults, deaf children and young people.
* Work collaboratively with families and settings so that newly referred deaf children and young people accelerate in listening, language, and communication.
* Assess and monitor functional hearing levels and offer advice to enhance listening and processing skills.
* Support the access and inclusion for deaf children and young people for whom deafness may not be their only need.
* Advise on the communication needs and language development of deaf children and young people using signed and/or spoken language, as appropriate.
* Support Deaf Tutors to deliver Communication at Home language courses (British Sign Language).
* Provide support and deliver deaf awareness training to key adults and peers.
* Prepare and present high quality written visit reports outlining targeted and specific adjustments to educational guidance.
