The Centre for Obesity, co-led by Dr Adrian Brown and Dr Janine Makaronidis, is seeking to recruit a Research Assistant. The Centre is internationally renowned for leading the field of gut hormone research. Ongoing research programmes combine clinical trial alongside mixed methods approaches to enable translation into clinical practice, with studies focusing on healthy human volunteers and patients living with obesity and type 2 diabetes. In addition, we run nutrition trials looking at the impact of diet on health. The focus of this post will be supporting an NIHR fellowship in kidney failure and obesity.
About the role
The University College London (UCL), Research Department of Experimental Translation Medicine - Centre for Obesity Research team led by Dr Adrian Brown and Dr Janine Makaronidis is seeking to appoint a committed Research Assistant, with experience in the conduct of clinical trials and qualitative research to join their translational research team. The successful applicant will be an autonomous individual working within a multi-disciplinary team based at RFH, UCLH and UCL and will support the running of a study looking at weight loss in people living with obesity and kidney disease on haemodialysis funded by the National Institute for Health Research. The post-holder will play a key role in assisting in the running of the study. The role includes close liaison with department clinicians and other multi-disciplinary staff. The multi-disciplinary team of the UCL Centre for Obesity Research is comprised of clinicians, allied health professionals, scientists and a trial manager. In addition, the post-holder will help to conduct interviews, workshops and group discussions with stakeholders including healthcare professionals, patients and carers/family members. The post-holder will work flexibly across disciplines to ensure the successful working of the project. Responsibilities will cover a spectrum of research and clinical tasks including, but not limited to:
1. Qualitative research including surveys, individual interviews, and focus groups.
2. Recruiting participants and obtaining consent.
3. Conducting trial assessments, supporting research participants/patients.
4. Collection and preparation of study data including biological samples, analysis of biological specimens.
5. Performing data entry, assisting in the analysis and interpretation of trial data.
6. Assisting with the day-to-day running of the project as well as assisting with laboratory work associated with the projects undertaken by the group.
The post-holder will be based at the Rayne Building but may be required to work remotely at times. The post is funded until 30 June 2026 in the first instance.
About you
We wish to recruit a Research Assistant who will be based within the Centre for Obesity Research at University College London. The successful applicant for this exciting post will be a team player, with excellent communication skills alongside previous experience in qualitative research methods, working on clinical trials and have some laboratory experience. The post-holder will play a key role in assisting with the running of a study looking at weight loss in people living with obesity and kidney disease on haemodialysis funded by the National Institute for Health Research. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic researcher with:
1. A degree (MSc, BSc) in nutrition, life sciences subject or a related discipline or professional qualification in a health care related discipline.
2. Experience working with qualitative and quantitative research methods including interviews, workshops and running clinical studies.
3. Analysis of qualitative data (e.g. NVivo) and quantitative data (e.g. SPSS, Stata, R).
4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in presenting data to diverse audiences.
5. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a research team.
