Your Initial Project: Laing O'Rourke have been appointed as a construction partner for National Grid's Great Grid Partnership programme - a transformative £2.7bn infrastructure project that will revolutionise the UK's electricity grid. Our scope of work is valued at £1.5bn+ over eight years.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced civils Estimator to join our team, pricing enabling, infrastructure, and structural works packages across National Grid Infrastructure starting from £50m+. Proximity to Birmingham, where our project team are based, would be advantageous. However, we are also open to hybrid working from our Dartford or Sale offices, provided you are comfortable with regular travel to Birmingham.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Prepare and submit competitive, high-quality target costs for national grid projects.
2. Utilise Digital Engineering (DE/BIM) tools and estimating software (we use Candy) to drive efficiency and consistency.
3. Understand and drive through LOR's 'Value Proposition' including self-delivery, digital engineering, and Design for Manufacture & Assembly (DfMA).
4. Lead commercial analysis of subcontractor quotations and support on risk, qualification, and margin considerations.
5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Design, Commercial, Engineering, Procurement, and Digital Engineering (BIM).
6. Mentor and support less experienced Estimators, fostering a high-performance team environment.
7. Ensure all bids are subject to adjudication and final analysis.
8. Ensure the consistent preparation and adherence to mandatory final settlement analysis.
9. Engage effectively with clients and external consultants to align project objectives.
10. Ensure compliance with internal governance processes throughout the tender process.
About You:
1. Proven experience in estimating infrastructure or civils projects.
2. Expertise in forecasting net prime cost, preliminary costing, and cost planning from first principles.
3. Competent managing estimating procedures from bid preparation to post-tender negotiations.
4. Knowledge of procurement processes and supply chain management.
5. Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
6. Highly organised, proactive, and commercially astute.
7. Previous site experience in an engineering or commercial role is beneficial.
8. Higher level qualification in relevant discipline e.g. Construction Management, or Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying with progression towards professional membership (RICS, CIOB, ICE, IMechE) preferred.
9. Willingness to be geographically mobile to support business needs.
10. Ability to obtain BPSSclearance.
