Paediatric Consultant (Neurodisability/Neurology & Child Development)
This post is offered on a full-time (10 PA) basis although less than full-time applications will be considered.
Duties will be based primarily at Dewsbury and District Hospital (DDH) although medical staff are also involved in delivering care to patients in Wakefield, at Pinderfields General Hospital (PGH).
We would welcome colleagues with a sub-specialty interest in Neurodisability/Neurology and Child Development. There would also be the opportunity for the successful candidate to undertake or develop a specific role or responsibility in line with the candidate's experience and requirements of the service.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the post will include:
1. General Paediatric, Neurodisability/Neurology and Child Development Clinics (additional admin time provided for Neurodisability/Child Development Clinics)
2. Participation in the Department Safeguarding Rota (involves providing a safeguarding clinic, seeing up to 2 referrals from social care approximately once a month)
3. Administrative duties, for which appropriate office space and secretarial support is provided
4. Consultant of the week (COW) cover for acute Paediatrics at PGH on site 08:30-16:30 hrs Monday-Friday, shared with colleagues on an approximate 1 in 7 basis. There are 2 consultants covering at any one time: one taking GP referrals and covering the Children's Assessment Unit and a second covering the inpatient Paediatric Ward and HDU.
5. Consultant of the week (COW) cover for acute Paediatrics at DDH on site 10:00-18:00 hrs then non-resident 18:00-22:00 Monday-Thursday (with day off on the Friday), shared with colleagues on an approximate 1 in 13 basis. Same COW shift (10:00-22:00) worked on a Friday on 1 in 12 basis before 19:00-08:30 weekend shifts. There is a team of 3 Paediatric doctors made up of: one consultant, one FY2/ST1-3 trainee and one ST4-8 trainee who cover the Children's Assessment Unit which is open 10:00-22:00. Both trainees are on site 10:00-22:00.
6. On-call duties for Paediatrics shared with colleagues on an approximate 1 in 11 basis Monday to Friday: resident at PGH from 16:00-21:30 then non-resident on call 21:30-08:30.
7. On-call duties - 1 in 4 weekends. Weekend on calls in Paediatrics are shared with colleagues with one of the following shift patterns (3 consultants on per weekend):
1. 08:30-11:30 resident at PGH then non-resident on call for DDH 11:30-22:00 Saturday and 08:30-14:30 resident at PGH then non-resident on call for PGH 14:30-19:00 Sunday
2. As above but with 08:30-19:00 shift on Saturday and 08:30-22:00 shift on Sunday
3. 19:00-21:30 resident at PGH then non-resident on call 21:30-08:30 Saturday and Sunday
8. Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework, with a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in the core 10 PA timetable. Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with the skills of the successful candidate and changing requirements of the service.
9. There are opportunities to undertake educational supervision and clinical supervision of trainees (following appropriate training) as well as other roles/responsibilities within the department in teaching/training, research/innovation, leadership and safeguarding depending on the interests of the applicant and service need.
Person Specification
Experience
* Is able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Paediatric Training.
* Note: For subspecialty posts or posts with more than forty percent subspecialty work, applicant must fulfil the required criteria from that subspecialty. The relevant CSAC can advise here. As the attached Representative you will be a member of the relevant subspecialty.
* Valid BLS Training
* Experience working in NHS
* Wider experience, research, and training, in providing subspecialty service (if applicable).
* Valid APLS and NLS (this may be mandatory for some posts).
Other
* Ability to fulfil all of the duties of the post, including on-call commitments and travel requirements
* Satisfactory Enhanced DBS and required immigration status

Qualifications
* Please state full GMC number.
* MRCPCH by examination or equivalent.
* Full GMC registration.
* On the GMC's Specialist Register OR within six months of CCT at time of scheduled interview.
* Note: CESR applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application
* PhD in Paediatrics
* Note: In some countries the MD is the primary medical qualification, not a postgraduate qualification
Management
* Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS
* Understanding of management issues including medical management, clinical governance, service planning, and quality improvement
* Evidence of leadership attributes and experience
* Evidence of motivational skills
* Evidence of participation in clinical audit/QI project, understanding the role of these in improving the medical practice
* Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence, so as to improve clinical outcomes
* Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff
* Training the Trainers certification
